We went from a class of twenty-seven at the start of the third year to nine who actually took the GCSE.

So much better out of context

This raises the very important question: is the (obviously correct) day/month/year little- or big-endian?

Little-endian, because the bit which changes the fastest comes first.
Self-referential signatures are for people too boring to come up with more interesting alternatives.

Big-endian, because times are always big-endian, and hence dates have to also be big-endian as otherwise date/time combos are doomed to be middle-endian.

This is getting even more complicated and difficult to follow than the technical discussions in Languages & Linguistics.

I wish this were more of an exaggeration.

rotting bones wrote: Fri Dec 20, 2024 10:47 pmI know people will ignore this, so I told ChatGPT to put it in epic verse:

Sing, O Muse, of the tangled paths that lie hidden in code,
Where mighty reason and logic fail to bestow a swift guide.
Lo, the famed question of P versus NP arises like thunder,
Dark on the horizon it broods, defying both hero and sage.
For if P and NP be as twins, yoked tight in one harness,
Then all problems in NP’s embrace yield swiftly to reasoned craft,
No brute guessing nor cunning trick would be needed to vanquish
Complex riddles that now entangle the wits of mortal machines.

But behold! The wise have long toiled, yet the truth’s undivined;
If, as most fear, P differs from NP’s shadowed domain,
Then the traveler who seeks a route through the densest of forests
May not find a neat, well-trodden path free of hindering vines.
No polished algorithm, in hours finite and swift, may solve
Those deep puzzles whose keys lie buried under vast search trees,
Beneath mountains of combinatorial knots, their sizes unbound.

Thus, the brave engineers, with no final proof to console them,
Forge cunning heuristics—sharp blades to hack through the brambles.
They accept compromise, trading perfection for progress and speed,
A careful guess, a guided probe, rather than blind exploration.
With heuristics in hand, they chart a course through complexity’s dusk,
Not certain, yet hopeful, not exact, yet gracefully swift.
So shall the machines press on, wise in their bounded ambitions,
Until truth’s bright dawn or a secret key shall at last be revealed.

I'm not saying that I agree with this quote, but it is nicely straight and to the point.

The earlier quotes in this post are simply there to provide context for the last one, which is the one I'm getting at:

World No.2 Swiatek says doping process ‘fair’ and support appreciated
Man in Space wrote: Fri Dec 27, 2024 8:01 am

- Is Swiatek the vice-whatever of world affairs or is he Earth-2’s variant?
- Is he talking about testing for doping, or promoting some sort of doping method?
- “Fair” as in “equitable” or “fair” as in “mid”?
- Does he appreciate the support or commanding us to support those who are appreciated?
bradrn wrote: Fri Dec 27, 2024 8:23 am

- Iga Swiatek is the current No.2 woman’s tennis player in the world
- She is talking about testing for doping (though you would be forgiven for thinking otherwise…)
- ‘Fair’ as in ‘equitable’
- The former, I should hope!
