I. Introduction

Kasela is a world, similiar to zompist's world. This planet is similiar to ours, or at least during Carboniferous. However, one big difference between this and real world is the presence of magic system.

a. Magic system
This world is based on three things. Material, mana, and energy. Material is everything that is tangible to us. Like oxygen atom, carbon atom, protein, to our body. Mana is energy that spirit consumes for living. Like photon, mana comes from star. However, mana is radiated in lesser amount. If mana collide with material, mana with high percentage bounces off, only a small percentage of them is absorbed into material. Spirit is a sentient particle capable of phase through material and/or pushes material. Spirit eats mana for living. Living being is basically a collection of material that is capable of collecting mana and is controlled by a collection of spirit. A living being can absorb mana by absorption along the edge of the organism (plants), or by eating another living being, and rob the mana storage.

If a caster wants to cast a spell, s/he will concentrate to direct a spirit to a target, apply a force to it, and make the spirit return to himself. The spell can be lifting an object (applying a force to all atoms in unison), to performing a certain chemical reaction (applying a force to an atom of specific kinds).

Well, one world-builder to another...
This isn’t a bad start. But there are a lot of questions that need to be answered. For example, what makes “spirit” a sentient particle separate from mana or matter? Could you have living beings that didn’t have spirits? If a creature can gain energy through mana, who’s to say it couldn’t transform the mana into proteins for its own consumption——in effect creating matter from nothing? Can all creatures cast spells, or just humans? Why?
My name means either "person who trumpets minor points of learning" or "maker of words." That fact that it means the latter in Sindarin is a demonstration of the former. Beware.

Please put your question on a line each using list tag.
  1. 1. "what makes “spirit” a sentient particle separate from mana or matter?" A spirit is something that can manipulate them. Mana will adhere to matter, but other than that, they won't interact. Spirit manipulate matter in a way that would violate physical laws.
    2. No, at least not like the creature in this world. In fact, life only exists because the spirit wants to collect mana
    3. No, the spirit can't transform mana into protein. That said creature can eat other creature to raid the mana storage. (A creature stores more mana than the air around them) Spirit can only transform mana into force. The force is used to manipulate the matter so it can store mana more efficiently.
    4. All creatures can cast spell. But animal can do it only instinctually. This is the same reason why animal can't use weapons, really.
