Well, the Romans changed the administrative divisions in their empire several times. But the general idea which parts of the empires were Italia, Gallia, Hispania and the like, did not change. After all, they could not change mountain ranges at all and the courses of major rivers not much.

Well, the Romans changed the administrative divisions in their empire several times. But the general idea which parts of the empires were Italia, Gallia, Hispania and the like, did not change. After all, they could not change mountain ranges at all and the courses of major rivers not much.

And what’s interesting is how those stable geographic boundaries ended up shaping cultural identities long after the empire fell. Places like Gaul and Hispania eventually morphed into France and Spain, but the regional divisions still echo Roman lines. Even modern infrastructure and trade routes often follow the same paths Roman engineers laid out

That must have been scary. I've tried finding out what the cause was, but it looks like they still haven't figured it out.

Update: I've now gone through the forms and written down all the parts I don't understand. My next planned step is that, tomorrow morning, I'll try to call the tax office to ask them about the things I've written down.

Thank you! The forms are online, though, so the risk of paper cuts is reduced. I'm still using some printouts and a note-taking piece of paper, though.

Update: I've now gone through the forms and written down all the parts I don't understand. My next planned step is that, tomorrow morning, I'll try to call the tax office to ask them about the things I've written down.

Next update: the tax office is updating their software and doesn't take any calls today. I'll have to try again on Monday.

Netherlands, because of emigration; Luxembourg, which was optional, but refund; US federal, because I have a US passport; and North Carolina state, because I'm domiciled in NC per US law (though while not obligatory, I still file the NC return for legal reasons).

Ouch! Commiserations. OK, technically I did two different taxes - income and turnover - but they're handled by the same agency, and I did them through the same online interface, so it wasn't that different from doing one tax.
