Self-referential signatures are for people too boring to come up with more interesting alternatives.

Men with beards carry more germs than dogs, study finds
Twitter response: sure, you can only carry so many dogs.

According to fivethirtyeight:
Some of those candidates, including author Marianne Williamson, Miramar, Florida, Mayor Wayne Messam and retired Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel, could end up qualifying for the debates
I don't know who Miramar is, but if the whole of Florida is running for President I think the debate stage will be rather crowded.

Re: Confusing headlines
I would've assumed that to be Richard Florida, the only person with that surname I know of who knows politics. But it seems as of right now he's not even living in America.
Re: Confusing headlines
Nah, I think there's only one person living in Florida: the famous Florida Man!Salmoneus wrote: ↑Tue Apr 16, 2019 4:23 pm According to fivethirtyeight:

Re: Confusing headlines
I follow his twitter. He has an endless collection of articles naming himself and many of them qualify for this thread.

I think it may just be a typo for Flo Rida.Salmoneus wrote: ↑Tue Apr 16, 2019 4:23 pmSome of those candidates, including author Marianne Williamson, Miramar, Florida, Mayor Wayne Messam and retired Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel, could end up qualifying for the debates

Re: Confusing headlines
Police throw the book at migrant children, teaching them it's a crime not to read (ABC [Australia])
They were going for cutesy, but given the current political climate, this caused consternation in the Facebook group where it was shared. (It didn't help that "ABC" is the name of both a US broadcaster as well as an Australian one and they abbreviated "Western Australia" to "the state of WA" so at first glance many of us thought it was happening in the state of Washington.) Apparently it rubbed some Aussies the wrong way as well because it's since been changed.

Re: Confusing headlines
Given Australia's history and current problems with immigrants I don't see how it being ABC Australia makes it any better.

Re: Confusing headlines
I'm not sure it makes it any better, but it probably does help make it less confusing.
Re: Confusing headlines
Not really a confusing headline, but interesting nonetheless from a language-change point of view: a circular flash in today's Metro containing the text "property porn".

Well there already is food porn and scenery porn.

Re: Confusing headlines
On Instagram sometimes people will post #furnitureporn etc with double entendres like "she's got a nice backside" but mostly it's just pictures presented directly as pictures. See also #troutporn and probably a hundred others. With the ones that are animals, I doubt anybody would play up the porn meaning very much. It has to be something nobody would find sexy to be funny.
Re: Confusing headlines
I've seen "milporn" for years as a description of excessive attention to military machinery in action movies.
Re: Confusing headlines
Once when I was younger, my dad and I were watching TV together and saw an ad for some TV program (I think from Lonely Planet?) involving the mating habits of chameleons or some other kind of animals. Then my dad said, "This is what is called 'green porn'!" which made me laugh. (EDIT: Or at least makes me laugh now )
Re: Confusing headlines
I can't help but think of the Discovery Channel, at least before it turned into reality TV, and the Bloodhound Gang.

Language Log found an absolute beauty the other day in Daily Kos: Congressman Florida Man hired former Trump staffer fired after hanging around white nationalists.
Re: Confusing headlines
Took me awhile but I figured it out without looking anywhere for help. My train of thought was similar to Vicki's on Language Log.
