Well, all you need is a piece of bamboo (or reed) and a sharp knife…

Oddly enough, no. But maybe I was just being careful. (And my knife isn’t too sharp.)

Sharper is actually better than less sharp in cases like these because then you have more control over the knife, and thus are less liable to cut yourself in the first place.

Hmm… I guess that would make sense.

Also, if you do cut yourself, cuts from sharper blades tend to heal faster.

would a calligraphy pen or calligraphy marker suffice, maybe at 2.0 or 2.0, for those of us who try to avoid sharp objects? (as i do)

Sure, that works fine too. I have a bunch of calligraphy pens too, but I prefer this one since I can cut it to whatever width and angle I want. (It’s also less messy since it doesn’t have an ink reservoir.)

bradrn wrote: Tue Aug 12, 2025 5:32 amWell observed! But I’m sorry to say that the actual graphic forms got a bit messed up there. If I had done that image a bit more carefully, it should have been clearer that ‘hook left’ was meant to be ‘turn slightly to the bottom’, and that ‘hook right’ is just a variant of ‘turn slightly to the right’. (This should be much clearer in the second image I posted.)
Ah, okay. So the stroke endings are even more limited. Which of course creates a distinct style to the script.

I experimented with a brush pen a while ago, although I never quite got the hang up of it. Unfortunately this was quite a rough time (which is really saying something) so I was preoccupied with other stuff. Perhaps the time has come to try again with some bamboo, although Missouri is not exactly its prime habitat.

I've seen potted bamboo indoors here in the US myself, so even if you don't have access to bamboo growing outdoors you could still get yourself a bamboo plant and sacrifice a stalk.

I have a brush pen too, but never got the hang of it either. I should try again someday.

As for bamboo: even if you can’t get any, surely you can at least find some reeds? Missouri is named after a river, after all…

Just because there is a Missouri River does not mean that malloc lives anywhere near it, or that reeds grow in it. I still suggest finding some potted bamboo myself.

Most garden centers and plant nurseries which have equipment for having a natural or artificial pond, will have potted reeds of one sort or another. And even if they don't have reeds, they'll have bamboo...at the very least, the coiled Good Luck Bamboo.

I don't know about that far west, but when I was in Maryland, the ballparks and playground near me, it had cattails in the streams.

‘Good Luck Bamboo’ isn’t actually a bamboo: it’s more closely related to dragon trees, snake plants and asparagus. I strongly suspect that it wouldn’t work.

Cattails, on the other hand, might actually work. They’re at least in the same order as reeds and bamboos (though a different family). But you’d have to try it first.

sadly, I haven't lived near cattails for over a decade now; i barely go to gardening centers anymore.
