Sharper is actually better than less sharp in cases like these because then you have more control over the knife, and thus are less liable to cut yourself in the first place.
Also, if you do cut yourself, cuts from sharper blades tend to heal faster.
Sure, that works fine too. I have a bunch of calligraphy pens too, but I prefer this one since I can cut it to whatever width and angle I want. (It’s also less messy since it doesn’t have an ink reservoir.)

I have a brush pen too, but never got the hang of it either. Just because there is a Missouri River does not mean that malloc lives anywhere near it, or that reeds grow in it. As for bamboo: even if you can’t get any, surely you can at least find some reeds? Missouri is named after a river, after all…
Most garden centers and plant nurseries which have equipment for having a natural or artificial pond, will have potted reeds of one sort or another. And even if they don't have reeds, they'll have bamboo...at the very least, the coiled Good Luck Bamboo.
‘Good Luck Bamboo’ isn’t actually a bamboo: it’s more closely related to dragon trees, snake plants and asparagus. I strongly suspect that it wouldn’t work.

sadly, I haven't lived near cattails for over a decade now; i barely go to gardening centers anymore.Cattails, on the other hand, might actually work. They’re at least in the same order as reeds and bamboos (though a different family). But you’d have to try it first.
