Now I'm curious - what is a song whose title is a German translation of the title of a notorious pro-Klan propaganda movie like?
What are you reading, watching and listening to? - All languages

In the 80s, the Slovenian avant-garde band Laibach did covers of pop songs as fascist anthems. (As an art statement.)
Geburt einer Nation is a cover of One Vision sung in ominous German, and the trick works very well. The lyrics of One Vision, when taken outside context, have disturbing implications.
You can check the video on YouTube, I can't really do justice to it. If you like that kind of disturbing humor (it'd definitely not for everyone), my favorite is Opus Dei (Life is Life)
Laibach is still active. Last I heard they were doing the Song of Music. They don't just do covers; one of their projects I liked was Also sprach Zarathustra as industrial metal.

Like an ad for light beer, obviously.

Thank you, interesting! Probably not for me, though.Ares Land wrote: ↑Sat May 30, 2026 4:41 amIn the 80s, the Slovenian avant-garde band Laibach did covers of pop songs as fascist anthems. (As an art statement.)

Anime:
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou: https://youtu.be/_3_dBxBi84I
Botan Kamiina Fully Blossoms When Drunk. I love this show so much, or at least the couple episodes I've seen.
Kino's Journey is interesting. It's like Invisible Cities with speculative fiction elements. Occasionally pretentious if you ask me, but nothing outrageous.

Spent a lot more of this afternoon than I should have watching and listening to this almost two hour long Youtube conversation between Flint Dibble* and Bret Devereaux: https://www.youtube.com/live/mfA8uwx4dkg
*Yes, that's his actual name. And in what may or may not be a coincidence, he works in a profession that might well sometimes involve dibbling with flints.

Gods of the Upper Air by Charles King. In this book, Margaret Mead says the Bukiyip people traditionally had no sexual hangups. I'm reading An Outline of Bukiyip grammar. I've previously read it's in a famility of gendered languages where the genders are saner than what Eurasians are used to.
I've already traced all of it, but I'm still reading and re-reading the Orpheus code when I get the time. Hopefully, I can get a beta release out in a few months. I'm hoping to use it to create a (free) course on the fundamentals of algorithms from first principles. A few years ago, I gained experience teaching undergrads how to write an interpreter in C++ for 3 years, including helping them debug the issues they ran into. The language was randomized every semester.

The only absolute prohibition Yudkowsky insisted on is to stop buying lottery tickets. However, he is a monetarist libertarian. He has attended dinners associated with Thiel.

Some songs of Nazrul:
The song with the most views on YouTube: https://youtu.be/9c1NIrAqXe4 (Edit: I noticed this has a translation in the subtitles.)
Biggest Islamic song: https://youtu.be/oA03cLkNEsg
Biggest Hindu song: https://youtu.be/DLGvA6VVaGs
You can tell Nazrul's songs were closer to the classical Hindustani style than the simpler, popular Bengali Renaissance style of Tagore: https://youtu.be/aB8Wa_SkX1M
PS. My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh. Warning: Depressing.

The word for "beseecher" in the sub translation literally means beggar woman. I vaguely recall Badiou mentioning that a French poet wrote a line like, "beggar woman at my side". I'm guessing it's Mallarmé. That's whom all these postmodernist-adjacent philosophers love.rotting bones wrote: ↑Sun Jun 14, 2026 11:35 pm You can tell Nazrul's songs were closer to the classical Hindustani style than the simpler, popular Bengali Renaissance style of Tagore: https://youtu.be/aB8Wa_SkX1M
Should I actually read Mallarmé at some point?

I must stop hate-reading political texts written by people whose politics I can't stand during times when I could and should do something productive instead. Mallarmé is really great though I wish they'd translate him into French
