I don't think this is how sound change usually works.
French had /j/ → /d͡ʒ/, no?

Yes, but I don't think anybody was tired of [j] and suddenly decided consciously to affricate it.

Anyway, intrusive [ç] after terminal [i] with a rising-falling pitch.
