‘I have never eaten a single goat’ is licit for me. ‘I have never eaten one goat’ doesn’t feel quite as natural, but is still very clear to me. I think we may be dealing with interdialectal differences here rather than non-native grammar.

(That being said, I’d still go with ‘I have never eaten goat’.)

(And incidentally, it appears the previous post was the 2000th in this thread!)

Example:

“Ha-ha, John likes eating goats.”
“I’ll have you know I’ve never eaten one goat!”
That is a very unusual usage, though, that only makes sense given that context. To simply deny that one has eaten goat, the normal, native-sounding phrasing would be "I've never had goat" or "I've never eaten goat".

I find this weird-sounding, too. He didn't read one book (presumably out of a set he was expected to read) does check out, though, oddly enough. Maybe it's a regional thing?

That one feels, well, dialectal to me for some reason. I myself would be used to "He didn't read any of the books" in that case.

I would probably say that under most circumstances; I think I would be expressing quite a lot of exasperation with "He didn't read (even) one (of the) book(s)".

It's not funny it's annoying. I don't wanna go in the conlang fluency thread and see XXX's scribble and broken english he doesn't even give any pronounciation guide.

That's a lame excuse.

His "conlang" is some fictitious jumble of random characters and has no viable explanation. Multiple questions about how it works, and copious opportunities for him to explain, and still, zero. Nothing. It's beyond annoying when the rest of the folks participating in this thread do so in good faith by providing gloss, pronunciation, etymological notes, etc. Why do you feel the need to defend what is obviously some strange attempt by him to be "mYsTeRiOuS"? How does this help the board, or you?
