Minor vent: My neighbor's young child is markedly unhappy and letting it be known. It's also 1 in the morning right now.

I’m getting increasingly scared about antisemitism in this country. Hateful graffiti has increased to almost a daily occurrence, daubed indiscriminately on schools, houses and synagogues. A kosher café was firebombed, followed by a synagogue, then the former house of one of the most prominent Jewish community leaders in Australia, then a daycare centre. Just yesterday, a caravan packed full of high explosives was discovered in a suburb of Sydney, alongside the addresses of the Great Synagogue and the Sydney Jewish Museum. And those aren’t even all the incidents. If things continue on like this (God forbid), I fear that someone will be murdered sooner or later. I pray not.

That's pretty scary news. Likewise, I hope nobody gets murdered, or even hurt.

From what I read it is suspected that these antisemitic attacks are likely being committed by ordinary criminals without any real ideological involvement of their own who are being paid from without Australia, which makes cracking down on this harder because even if the people who commit such actions themselves are rounded up more people will simply replace them.

That's terrible. I hope it doesn't get any worse, and indeed, gets better.

I wanted to provide an update. I found out what happened to my friend. Without going into detail, it was an accidental death. So perhaps he was really planning to meet with me. It's so tragic, but that helps. I have never known grief like it. It's ok while I'm busy. It's not when I'm not. But I also don't want to be busy. I want to grieve, it feels like it needs space. It's weird. I'm learning a lot, I guess.

One thing you will learn is that modern Western societies generally suck at giving grieving the space it requires. Grief makes people uncomfortable. They treat it like an unfortunate illness and they want you to get "better" as soon as possible so they can interact with you without being reminded that they, too, will be forced to deal with this all someday. So take the time you need, and seek out people who respect that. (There's a reason why widows like me gravitate toward other widows; other folks just don't understand.)

I'm relieved to see that you at least managed to get some closure. There are multiple people I've lost touch with over the years and which I can only presume dead, because I've never received any definite information one way or the other.

I'm deeply grateful for your kind words, and deeply sorry for your loss.

As to the closure part. I had to break down a lot of barriers I had held in place for a long time to find out the information about what had happened to him; things I had felt would be intrusive (such as turning up at an address out of the blue). I am so glad I did and I am sensing it will leave a lasting change in me to observe that it was necessary to follow my instinct and go against social norms and expectations in order to get this closure and be able to witness his life commensurately with the strength of our bond.

After finally getting rid of the lingering cough from my last cold during the holidays, yesterday afternoon I got another respiratory infection and in many ways it's even worse. Phlegmy, squeaky, painful coughing fits and headache and muscle weakness.

My ability to deal with it is diminished compared to when I was staying at my mum's during the holidays since in order to get food I have to go to the cafeteria which is in another building 7 minutes away from my dorm and breathing the cold air makes my throat feel like it's on fire.

I need to go to the store to get more meds and maybe tylenol cold and flu but i don't know if I'd make it with how awful and weak I feel.

DoorDash does medicine sometimes. Maybe try that?

Does DoorDash operate in Canada? Specifically Thunder Bay?

Sorry to hear that, and I hope you feel much better soon. Incidentally, I have always wanted to see Thunder Bay.

Thank you for your suggestion I was able to get some tylenol cold and flu so hopefully this sickness can stop kicking my ass.

This is a First World vent, but I managed to find a significant outstanding bug in zeptoforth within a day of making the big 1.10.0 release, necessitating a whole new 1.10.0.1 release, which wasted a few hours of my time. I have a way of finding bugs after I make major releases...
