I think he started out as one of the authors whose political writings were influential among the 1968 generation, or perhaps a bit later. It's just that unlike many other influential authors from that period, he stayed alive, and kept churning out political writings, for a long, long time.

Fun fact: Justin B. Rye, who's politically very far to the Left, but also very much interested in Linguistics, once expressed his opinion that "Chomsky should stick to politics".

I don't see the point of arguing about his precise ideology. It's clearly more a matter of psychology than political theory for him. Like all too many people who are into politics, he mainly cares about going on hating the people he's always hated.

Funny that; I have almost opposite views :)

If there's a pattern, it's a simple one of swallowing propaganda hook, bait and sinker as long as it's not American. It's a very common pattern, and a thoroughly cross partisan one: you'll find examples of it left, right or center.

I unite the two in the view that Chomsky should probably stick to something outside of both of those areas.

I find this to be rather unfortunate in his case as I in many ways would agree with his political views if it were not for this.

Did you even read what I wrote, or are you reflexively blathering?

Anyways, Republicans and so-called "Libertarians" are nearly identical in their actual views, while big-C Communists and anarchists really have in common that they are (in the case of big-C Communists, ostensibly) socialist.

I'm talking about the supposed "terrorist attack" on Russia yesterday, and today's meeting of the Russian National Security Council.

Oh, they're probably going to invade Ukraine... wait, they did that already! So I guess, it doesn't mean anything except more Russian mouth-foaming?

This didn't even make headline news here. What I'm seeing is mostly coverage of the apparent growing rift between the Wagner Group and the regular Russian army (probably because it's music to USAmerican ears).

Russia claimed that "Ukrainian terrorists" had supposedly carried out an attack on Russian territory, and Putin summoned a meeting of the Russian National Security Council in response. Not much seems to have come out of that so far.

Made me think of "Castaway".

Now Russia claims to have shot down Ukrainian drones that were attacking the Kremlin - yeah, like drones could make it all the way from the Russian-Ukrainian border to Moscow without getting trouble from Russian air defenses, but get stopped just in time before reaching the Kremlin - and Medvedev calls for "eliminating" Zelensky.

Reminds me of Mathias Rust, who luckily wasn't shot down. Together with the fact that Russian aircarft bombed the Russian city of Belgorod not long ago, this looks like the usual Russian chaos.

That might be, but the fact that Russia is now blaming the USA for the whole thing is still pretty worrying.

That's hardly new, with Ukraine. The US has been somehow at fault for everything since the beginning, in the eyes of the Russian government.
