On IRL premodern social hierarchies
Typically, patriarchy used to be only one of the most apparent manifestations of a hierarchical social structure and social ideology that reflected on all levels: there was hierarchy of genders (not only in binary male/female: there were eunuchs, sometimes codified roles for gay or trans people to some extent, etc.) bloodlines, castes, classes, jobs, levels of wealth, legal status (slave/serf/free etc.), reputations, learning, etc.

Because rule of law was perceived to be a mechanism of upper caste control, corruption used by caste mafia became popularly accepted, as it was perceived to be a means to achieve lower caste empowerment.
