Thanks all!

Fortunately, this is now first author publication #3 (and #7 overall!), so not my first time, but still feels good (and doesn't get old, or at least it hasn't in the five years since my first publication!).

I'm cat-sitting for a neighbor. The cat doesn't really much like me, and frankly back at him, but the experience of sharing a room with a cat, overall, I'm liking a lot. Off the top of my head, it's really pleasant to have him sit on my windowsill chirruping his frustrated torture-murder ambitions at the birds -- though I admit that may not reflect well on me. ObConlang: his squeaks add flavor while I goof off on the ethnoorinthology of my pseudo-Tungusic conlang's lexicon.

Even the awkward waking-up routine of dealing with having him 'somehow' having fallen asleep in my leg-V despite all our mutual disregard, makes the fundamental ugliness of mornings more tolerable. And I appreciate his hard work at demolishing a pre-unravelled woolen sweater, and beating down the red-dot infestation that 'somehow' infests my place. I wouldn't contemplate getting one of my own, but a loaner cat is awesome.

I’m in Australia, so of course it’s more or less the other way round for my cat. (Our birds can be nasty.) Actually, it’s the other way round in general: the birds chase the cat and the cat chases the dog. Comes from living on the other side of the world, I guess.

And yes, cats are very cute despite it all :D

Does this opposite, upside-down, bizarro-world also explain why Australians refer to everyone as "mate" except for the person they would actually... you know... mate with? :?

An interesting conundrum, mate! And actually, one which I’ve never noticed before. I have no idea why this is.

My cat is too confident in her abilities. I'm sure she believes she could take out the pigeons and crows if only we let her.
(I'm pretty sure she couldn't. Crows aren't small birds, and they're smart.)

Seems like something of a twist on "I'm a chicken-hawk!!!" Instead, it's "I'm a CAT!!!" Yeah, whatever, bub. Beat it.

Was the vacation with the family or is being back home the happy thing?

Congrats on no longer being defenseless! Are you now fully done with the Master's degree? (I ask because they do strange things here in Wageningen with when you finish the degree vs. when you defend the thesis.)
