It would be if it were not for the fact that I am bummed I can't have real continuations...

bradrn wrote: Sat May 04, 2024 6:29 am I submitted a poster to ICON2024 (advertised earlier on this board), and my submission got accepted! Yet, I’m having second thoughts on whether to confirm my attendance or not. I’ve now been living in Paris for a month, and I‘m still struggling to get used to it; I’m not sure whether further travel to Orléans is something I’d be able to cope with or not. If I don’t go, then I’d miss out on an opportunity to discuss conlanging in person, which is something I never get… but then again, this forum gives me as many discussion opportunities as I could hope for, so I wouldn’t be missing out on too much.

Oh, and I have one more day to decide. So, yeah, I’m quite conflicted on what to do here.
For ‘one day’, now read ‘one-and-a-half hours’. My chronic indecision has caught up with me yet again… except insofar as I’m still leaning towards ‘no’. (And if I don’t confirm my attendance today, it will be a no. If only they hadn’t asked us to confirm so far in advance! Ah well, either way this forum gives me enough opportunities to discuss conlanging, conference or no conference.)

Whaat, why miss out on that opportunity? Is there some draconian punishment if you don't show up after having confirmed?

Because I’m barely coping as-is, and I’m worried I won’t cope if I do anything more stressful on top of this.

Er… I doubt it! But surely the whole point of confirming your attendence is that you’re promising you’ll definitely show up?

Can you send the organizers a message explaining your situation? Orléans is quite close to Paris; if you're actually interested in the conference it seems a bit strange not to at least try to go...

(Of course I can also understand not wanting to commit to something extra if you're already feeling overwhelmed.)

Hmm, fair point. Maybe I will.

My workplace got hacked last week and now they're closed for the week to fix the damage. On one hand, this means I get several days off. On the other, going so long without operation could push them into insolvency, especially given that they were already in something of a slump owing to glutted demand for their product.

Getting laid off would make leaving Missouri much easier since I no longer have this job tying me down. The trouble is finding another job of comparable quality elsewhere. For all the faults of my current residence, it does have an amazingly low cost of living. Any job elsewhere would have to pay considerably more than my current one to maintain the same standard of living.

Every state bordering Missouri save Illinois and Tennessee has a lower cost of living. According to US News and World Report, the state with the best affordability ratings in the entire country is Arkansas: https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states ... ordability

None of those states represents a meaningful improvement over Missouri for rather obvious reasons. Trading one far right backwater for another hardly makes sense. I thought it self-evident that I was comparing my current address with somewhere I would actually want to live.

It might if you by doing so you can save enough money to afford someplace better. Right now I have a friend in Chicago who plans to move back to Florida for a while so he can save up money and find someplace better when he moves back. (He lost his current roommate and can't afford his rent without one.)

Fair enough. I have mentioned many times over the years that I want to leave Missouri for somewhere more enlightened and perhaps assumed too much familiarity with my situation.

The autorisation de séjour* process for my move to Luxembourg is finally in the hands of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. On one hand, I'm extremely happy that I got the documents I needed and that the last pre-arrival paperwork formality is underway. On the other hand, though, there really isn't a good reason why it took almost five months for the HR to get me the documents I needed, plus the moving date I now have (mid-August) is still up in the air until the final authorization is in my hands.

*Autorisation de séjour: a sort of provisional residence permit for non-EU citizens to enter Luxembourg for more than 90 days. This has to be issued before entering the country in order to be able to obtain a final residence permit.

Fixed a major bug in zeptoforth and made a new release incorporating the fix, zeptoforth 1.6.4.2. Thing is, it was a really stupid bug that I should never had made, because it was neglecting to take leap months into account for months (but taking them into account for years) when converting dates from seconds since midnight 1 January 1970 to a time and date. I only caught this when playing around with using NTP to set times and dates for files, because this year happens to be a leap year.

Where you should have found a standard test suite for this? I feel there ought to be one, and I too would have a use for it.

I take it you're using the standard convention of every day being 86,400 seconds long, even when its longer? (I assume you're treating daylight-saving times as something on top, along with the ambiguity of 1:30 a.m. I like watching my radio-controlled analogue-display clock when the clocks change on a Sunday morning. It takes a couple of rests when the clock goes back, which it implements as going forwards 23 hours.) Do you support UTC?

Am I the only one who is unsure what the date is one minute after 'midnight 1 January 1970'? I don't think I am, as my car insurance regularly expires at 23:59, though I suspect it's still in force at 23:59:52.
