Anyone up for a good old-fashioned translation relay? RESULTS POSTED

One just got finished up at the Other Place and it struck me that I haven’t seen one on here in a while (aside from the reconstruction relays, but I’m talking translation). Anybody interested? I can start working on a text if there are takers.

It's similar, but in a conlang relay, each translator also provides some documentation alongside their text - a grammar and a lexicon, I believe.

I would love to participate but I won't have time until March. I've never done one before but it seems like it would be fun!

Ah. In that case, the only language of mine which could qualify is Wēchizaŋkəŋ. On the other hand, that one has horrible morphophonology which makes it near-impossible to understand… unless that’s an advantage in a relay, I dunno.

I would love to participate but I won't have time until March.

I think I could do this with one of my conlangs, as long as I get some warning about how "modern" the translation text will be.

I start with translating some text into a conlang. I give the conlang text, plus a brief grammar and lexicon, to the next participant (this is called a “torch”). Participant 2 translates the text from my conlang into theirs, messaging their torch to the next participant and sending me a copy of their torch plus a translation into smooth English. Participant 3 does the same out of Language 2 into Language 3, and so on. Eventually I receive the last participant’s torch and then translate that back into my conlang. Then we reveal the results, come out to the coast, have a few laughs.

Not even a full grammar is needed—only enough of a grammar to figure out that specific text would be required.

Hah, thanks for the reassurance I guess I’m in then. Worst case, we could just skip me if I really end up having no time.

(Oh, and Wēchizaŋkəŋ is just underdeveloped, not incomplete; it consists of one post in my scratchpad as present. For ‘hilariously incomplete’ you want my Protolanguage Number 2 grammar, which doesn’t even have a name yet.)

I’m down for that, yes.

How long do these things usually last? My concern with being at the end is that it might end up around my exam time — not that I have all that many this semester, but it certainly wouldn’t work best.

Anywhere from a week to two months, depending on the number of participants, difficulty of the text and conlangs, and real life issues.
