Here's some select pictures for illustration. These are both colonial images which I recently discovered as probably depicting the main god of the 1600s Eastern Algonquian peoples: Glooskap to the Mi'kmaq, Moshup to the Wampanoag. Otherwise, though, we have very little account from any Eastern Algonquian people (USA and Canada coast from Florida to Iceland) of their native Pagan religions. If anyone wrote them down, it hasn't survived. Instead what we have are many fairy tales from centuries later, told by the children of converts to various Christian religions. And it's clear the accounts have been altered from their original forms, though it's impossible to know exactly how. With vast comparative mythology and folklore study, it's a little possible to guess.
If I could guess at the mentality behind not recording their religions, if that's what happened, the writings show a sense of respect, as for Greek mythology, but also of disregard, as if writing it down and printing it wasn't a good idea. Today I think we would disagree, though printing in the colonies back then was really expensive. They notably did translate the whole Protestant Bible into 1600s Massachusett. Which is a statement, maybe. Meanwhile, and some will boo here, the Spanish did make very lengthy records of native Paganisms, though perhaps often also after conversion within one or more generations. The 1980s saw the decipherment of vast Mayan Hieroglyphic texts which are all pre-1492: But it's not like Cuneiform for giving us any mostly complete narratives. Instead, it's mostly just timelines with names and events. We have the Popul Vuh - a huge core myth - but it's from post-1492.
It seems to me that as a whole, Europeans approached North America as if it was the Old World or Afro-Eurasia when it was not. Without documenting the Pagan religions they encountered, they all just disappeared and changed into something else, and didn't leave behind them anywhere a huge body of writings like that of Ancient Greece and Rome. My research indicates that sizable libraries of texts existed in Ancient Mayaland and among the Eastern Algonquians - yet we know the Mayan ones were forcibly burned by the Spanish and it's not clear what happend to the Eastern Algonquian libraries. They seem to have been secretly destroyed by Indians and or non-Indians, maybe as a part of conversion to Christianity but maybe because of Pagan ideas relating to post-1492 events and unprecedented catastrophes.
(Most of the records of Eastern Algonquian texts - all seemingly non-writing symbol texts used to remind the reader of accompanying memorized narratives - are in 1600s accounts of these people, like those of Captain John Smith and John Lederer. And seemingly previously overlooked by scholars because not taken in context of similar accounts, namely of Mi'kmaq (Micmac) Hieroglyphic and the Ojibwe birchbark symbols. Along these lines, I have also found colonial accounts claiming that there existed a quipu writing system, though no quipus support this, although few survive.)
I suspect someone wrote a lot of it down and it's in some archive somewhere in the world. But maybe if such a thing was done, again, it has not survived. Which is amazing to me but I guess it's how it goes. Colonial works like A Key into the Language of America express interest and give summaries of the local Eastern Algonquian religions but they're very short and most of the surviving letters and other texts say nothing. And most of 1600s 1700s even 1800s USA and Canada Paganism seems like that, unwritten. Yet studying what is written and comparing it with archaeology and what is today practiced as the descendant or revival Pagan religions - this is something I have found very interesting.
I will say that it is interesting to try to compare the ancient Indian Pagan religions with the modern ones. Anyone who has undertaken extensive comparative religion study using primary sources and original languages may know that to which I am making reference.
These images are Captain John Smith's 1612 map of Virginia and the oldest seal of Massachusetts Bay Colony. I forget if these might depict what the Jamestown and Plymouth colony surrounding Powhatan and Wampanoag Indians thought their versions of Glooskap looked like. See my article on this topic for more. But I'm thinking these might be what the Indians thought Glooskap looked like because their apparel is otherwise consistent with what I'd expect.
