Re: Elections in various countries

Ah so theoretically I could have voted in the Thuringia election because that was even the first ever place I voted. But, with the speed the post goes at here (I usually get post from the UK about a month after sending), it likely would have arrived too late.

Re: Elections in various countries

Speaking of German elections, I have German citizenship but I'm not sure whether I am able to vote in Germany. I suspect not, because I have no address there, but I would like to check. Although it might be better to ask the embassy rather than the ZBB :D

Of course, but what led to that being the current legal situation?

Re: Elections in various countries

But why can anticonstitutionality only apply to parties? Such people should never be candidates, whichever party they stand for.

Re: Elections in various countries

Maybe I misunderstood what I had heard then.

I also consider those scenarios most likely.

Is there no possibility to do people like Höcke for hate crimes or anticonstitutionality?

Re: Elections in various countries

Ouch. That's an unfortunately high score for Höcke, who complains about being compared to Hitler when he shouts about 'lebensraum' for Germans in beerhalls and his own supporters can't tell the difference between his speeches and Hitler's (here's one of the articles mentioning this: https://www.theg...

On closer inspection, the restrictions on dogs appears to focus on 4 breeds, including rottweilers. Oh and inhabitants of the area concerned needed ID to get home. http://www.ipreunion.com/conseil-general/reportage/2019/10/23/prenez-vos-dispositions-visite-presidentielle-les-restrictions-de-circulat...

"Dogs and cutlery"??? And that's an incomplete list! The complete list of restricted things include also alcohol, mobile sound devices, crockery and glass bottles. The restrictions on guns and fireworks were a bit more explanatory. https://www.linfo.re/la-reunion/politique/visite-presiden...

Re: Elections in various countries

So Macron has come to Réunion, having got major roads shut off to all traffic, dogs and cutlery 10 hours before his arrival. Major roads that block most of the traffic on the north and west of the island when they're shut. On his arrival, protesters get gassed by the 1000 gendarmes he brought with h...

I was surprised Johnson even managed to get a new deal but remains to be seen what will become of it. It seems things can become better just by being your own... And now for something completely different: Who's ready for the UK's season finale? https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&e...

Re: Quick French question

Hopefully you'll have better luck with Canadian speakers :) Not with LA French speakers, though. The most common realisation for both /ɲ/ and /nj/ is [j̃]. Sometimes the nasalisation is lost, as in manière , which in Vermilion is often pronounced [majæ(r)], particularly when used adverbially. There...

Re: Dream sharing thread

I dreamed that I was in Geneva for some kind of climate-related thing. I think my dream was climate-related, too: last night, I dreamt I was eating in a restaurant with my girlfriend here in Saint-Denis, and then I went into an organic shop where someone was crushing spices and, when I came out, th...

Re: Quick French question

My linguistics professor made me realise that most people these days don't make the distinction any more, but the notation stays separate out of inertia. Similar things happen with phonetic notation of English.

Re: Innovative Usage Thread

Just in case, I would like to mention that Halloween has been celebrated in Scotland and Ireland for at least a few centuries before immigrants from these countries modified it in the US. The pumpkins were originally turnips/rutabaga (neeps) and changed to pumpkin in the New World precisely because ...

@Vijay: I tried to find information on his son saying this but to no avail. This is not a pretty fact about Gandhi, but Vijay is correct. Here's a quote from Gandhi himself, from 1921: Caste does not allow a person to transgress caste limits in pursuit of his enjoyment. That is the meaning of such ...

@Vijay: I tried to find information on his son saying this but to no avail. Do you have the quote or at least which son it was? I was already aware of opposition between Gandhi and Ambedkar on certain issues. As I understand, one of these was the idea of separate electorates for dalits. Ambedkar sup...

Re: Elections in various countries

If I understand correctly, you describe Mohandas Gandhi as casteist. Is this correct and what basis would there be for this? I have read Gandhi's autobiography as well as another biography (though admittedly not fully yet) as well as some other snippets and have never got the impression he was caste...
