Re: Language Practice (Help your fluency)
Pareixo l'extrany, com l'únic aquí que no entén alemany. I feel like the odd one out, being the only one here who doesn't understand German. Tant se val, ja que tots nosaltres publiquem traduccions. Not that it matters, since we all post translations. No tinc res en particular que dir, només vull i...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
Marking "part of speech" by a prefix is very artificial, but if you're creating an auxlang, why not. Same for "all POS + root combinations are valid" - not very naturalistic, and no doubt there are roots that kinda defy a straigtforward meaning. I know that, but I'm not aiming f...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
My newest conlang has a couple rules: 1. Roots have semantic meaning but no inherent part of speech. 2. Part of speech is marked by a prefix, and all POS + root combinations are valid. I'm working out the numbers right now, and the verb forms are pretty straightforward: 2 is double/duplicate (probab...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
The Romance ‘pronominal clitics’ are an odd case. After some searching, I’ve yet to find firm evidence that they aren’t affixes. What about compound tenses? E.g., "s/he left" is se fue , but "s/he has left" is se ha ido , not *ha se ido . Similarly, certain tenses allow clitic p...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
i still would say that "in bed" and "in school" both refer to physical locations even without the article. for one thing, almost nobody says "in the bed" in any context, and "in the school" is decidedly marked compared to the articleless form. With "scho...

Re: Conlang Random Thread
Say a language has two writing systems (which I'll call A and B). A is the official script, while B is a cursive handwritten script. The two scripts do not visually resemble one another. Would it be plausible for B to displace A as the "main" script (i.e., the standard script for books, st...

Re: Pronunciations you had to unlearn
I taught myself to stop pronouncing "February" as /ˈfɛb.juˌɛɹi/, which I grew up saying. I now say /ˈfɛb.ɹuˌɛɹi/ without thinking and when I hear /ˈfɛb.juˌɛɹi/ it sounds wrong to me. Is this a regional thing? This is the second time I've seen someone talk about saying /ˈfɛb.ɹuˌɛɹi/ online...

Re: Dream sharing thread
I dreamt I was reading some Star Wars fanfic that was one of the most gripping, emotionally powerful stories I'd ever read. Unfortunately, I remember almost nothing of it now, except: 1) Billie Eilish was Han and Leia's daughter 2) Someone died, I think 3) I woke up with a profound sense of "tf...

No wonder the "tutorial" wasn't very clear! And here I thought that was just a side effect of it being an early version Thanks again!bradrn wrote: ↑Mon Aug 09, 2021 9:52 am Here: https://github.com/bradrn/brassica/blob ... ntation.md. (The image wasn’t meant as a tutorial, though if the shoe fits…)

Thank you! One more question... where's the manual? (unless you mean the tutorial image)

Re: Brassica SCA [v0.0.2]
Hey, awesome! But I've got a couple questions:
1. Can this handle phonemes with multiple features, e.g., targeting voiced stops?
2. How do I write rules that affect only stressed or only unstressed syllables?

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
I know evolution from voicing contrast to aspiration contrast is a thing, but what about the reverse? And how would such a change realistically occur? Would it just be a case of unaspirated consonants becoming voiced and aspirated ones losing their aspiration, or would the acquisition of voicing be ...

Re: Pronunciations you had to unlearn
Moving to Spain a year ago, I had to unlearn /s/ for <z> and <c>, which is what I'd been taught in the US. In Spain, <z c> are pronounced /θ/. I've pretty much got the hang of it now... apart from occasionally slipping into ceceo (<z c s> all as /θ/) due to hypercorrection. In English, I've been tol...

Re: If natlangs were conlangs
I'd like to personally call out the creator of the Romance language family for their horrible orthography. Classical Latin had nice, straightforward orthography, I'll give them credit for that, but some of its daughter languages are just a mess. First offender: Spanish. I get the desire to get creat...
