Lingua Latina mortua est. Lingua Latina mortua manet. Nos autem eam occidimus. Quemadmodum solacia praebebimus nobis, linguicidis linguicidarum? Quis vero hunc sanguinem nobis lavabit? Quacum aqua nos tergebimus? Quae sollemnia veniam petentia, quos ludos sacros confingere debebimus? (Nietzsche, de morte linguae Latinae disserens, verbis paulum accommodatis.)
Latin is dead. Latin remains dead. And we have killed it. How shall we comfort outselves, the language murderers of all language murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has owned was wounded under our knives and then bled to death. Who will wipe this blood off us? With what water shall we clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? (Nietzsche, on the death of Latin, slightly adapted.)

It's true that Latin is a dead language, but I think it can be a bit misleading to say that per se. Certainly, it wasn't killed. While there aren't any native speakers now, it isn't because it was killed, but because it became French, Spanish, Italian, etc. But it's Nietzsche, so...
Ye knowe eek that, in forme of speche is chaunge
With-inne a thousand yeer, and wordes tho
That hadden pris, now wonder nyce and straunge
Us thinketh hem; and yet they spake hem so,
And spedde as wel in love as men now do.

Nietzsche)
What I wrote is a parody of a very famous quote Nietzsche once said regarding God, not Latin. More info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_is_dead

whenever i see christian evangelists (mormons, jehovahs, old men with recorded messages on a speaker), i want to go up and shout sth like "god is dead, and you killed him!". i've been able not to thus far, but i'm not sure i'll be able to resist next time~

edit: grammar

Sorry, I'm an idiot. I just wanted an excuse to use the passive voice though, I don't practice it enough

Has anyone encountred a distinction between "dead" and "extinct" languages?

It's more a distinction in application than in definition, as shown in Ser's example.

Here in Paris, after the world cup the other day, it seemed like the whole city shut down so that everyone could go outside and walk around aimlessly in celebration. I don't quite understand football fans.

No, when these latinists make a distinction between the two terms, they mean to say that Latin continues to be used even for modern concepts (among a number of people that keeps on getting reduced more and more, of course), but no one is (supposedly) using Sumerian in "an active way".

The difference between "dead" and "extinct" languages for me is that "dead" languages never stopped being spoken, unlike "extinct" languages.

@Ser:

Ok, it's possible that what I saw as a difference in usage is actually a case of different groups using different definitions. I definitely have seen "dead language" applied to what your Latinists would call "extinct". And, making things more complicated, Sumerian was for a time a dead language even by their definition - it was used in writing while the people writing it spoke Akkadian in daily life.

? I have no idea what you mean by that exactly, so I gave you just an approximation of what I'd fit in this place. The whole sentence looks pretty weird to me.

Because the languages are similar and I speak Russian better.

The last part sounds a bit odd; something like "... en ik beter Russisch spreek" or "... en mijn Russisch beter is" might be better.

A few decades ago I studied Russian, but I decided to discontinue studying it because the grammar and pronunciation of Russian were too hard.

I often tell myself that I'm going to learn to read Russian since there's a number of linguistics works written in this language that I want to read. I'm not really interested in either its famous literature nor the usefulness of the language, I'd do it just for these books. But it seems the day doesn't have enough hours, and I always have other projects. I have exactly the same problem with German.

Kennt ihr Schuwalowas Интернет-лингвистика. Вымышленные языки, um konstruirte Sprachen?
