This word is also a belated (and translingual) correction of Bienenkönig and the like.
Random Thread
Re: Random Thread
Huh? I didn't know that. Fascinating! Did people in earlier times in history think bee eggs were laid by males?
Re: Random Thread
I've been told that the Romans did, but I'm struggling to find a good source for this.

Re: Random Thread
Virgil, in Georgics book IV lines 67–68¹ and elsewhere in that book, seems to occasionally refer to queens as reges, i.e. kings, but he is analogising bees to human states there, so I'd be a little suspicious.
¹ the exact words here are “nam saepe duobus regibus incessit magno discordia motu,” roughly, for often discord arises between two kings with great force²
² Please don't take that translation as gospel – my Latin isn't the best and all the online translations accessible with a quick google are either very old ones torturing it into English verse or have other reasons to suspect their accuracy, so I haven't used them

Re: Random Thread
Inhabited skeps were difficult to examine. It seems that 'queen bee' was introduced to English in 1607, as a replacement for 'king bee'.
Re: Random Thread
Apparently they did! Opinions turned around after microscopes were invented, and glass panels to observe beehives. People really didn't understand how bees reproduced before. At least scholars didn't -- maybe beekeepers had a better idea?
"Queens" is misleading too -- the queens of social insects don't actually rule anything. To the extent that there are leaders, they're experienced workers.
Re: Random Thread
Yeah, that's what I find so annoying about science fiction or fantasy species which are supposedly based on eusocial insects. They are usually portrayed as "ruled" by their queens.
Re: Random Thread
More horrible news. I got pulled over for speeding again. Honestly not sure what to do since this will drive my insurance too high for me to pay and even cost me my license. It really isn't fair how others get away with outrageous crimes while my life is ruined by speeding.
Re: Random Thread
Hint: In many jurisdictions you can get your points reduced if you simply bother to come into your court hearing rather than paying up front. Also, you won't automatically lose your license from speeding unless you accrue N number of points in M months. (And even then, many jurisdictions have ways, such as 'drivers' safety' courses you can take, to get points taken off your license.)malloc wrote: ↑Sat Nov 15, 2025 9:58 am More horrible news. There is also the problem of my insurance costs. I am already paying quite a lot and I can't afford my costs there doubling. Thus far I have never found a way to decrease car insurance costs.
Re: Random Thread
Another hint: You can often drastically reduce your car insurance costs by regularly changing insurance carriers. About a year back I did so, and I reduced my outlay per six-month intervals by several hundred dollars.

Today I learned that there's a municipality called Harrislee in Germany. I am a bit surprised about that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrislee
Re: Random Thread
Won't the new insurance provider just look at everything the drove my cost at the old one and give me the same rate?
Re: Random Thread
No. A secret is that car insurance providers over time will drive up your insurance costs over time no matter what you do, even if you have a perfect driving record, and even if you have tickets on your record you can significantly reduce your costs by regularly changing car insurance providers.malloc wrote: ↑Sat Nov 15, 2025 11:03 amWon't the new insurance provider just look at everything the drove my cost at the old one and give me the same rate?

Re: Random Thread
I shouldn't be surprised by what kind of shit businesses in the USA can get away with any more, but I still am.
Re: Random Thread
I would have expected that the tickets would outweigh any other considerations for the insurance company. Do you have any recommendations for who might give me a better deal?Travis B. wrote: ↑Sat Nov 15, 2025 11:05 amNo. A secret is that car insurance providers over time will drive up your insurance costs over time no matter what you do, even if you have a perfect driving record, and even if you have tickets on your record you can significantly reduce your costs by regularly changing car insurance providers.
Re: Random Thread
Look around at multiple insurance providers and ask for quotes ─ you can do this online. There are online tools that will send out requests for quotes from multiple insurance providers (note, however, that these are often linked to specific parent insurance providers).malloc wrote: ↑Sat Nov 15, 2025 11:25 amI would have expected that the tickets would outweigh any other considerations for the insurance company. Re: Random Thread
I see then. It will take several weeks for my case to work through the system so I can't do much with insurance until then. Obviously my new rate will depend on how severe they consider my speeding ticket.
