alice wrote: Mon Jan 26, 2026 2:49 pm This is bad mangement, not your fault. In this country in most jobs it is illegal to make employees work overtime; employers can ask, but must respect the employee's decision, in all circumstances, and cannot fire them for declining. Something similar should be in your contract. (Shouldn't it? USAians please clarify!)

And again, suppose that you're made to work longer hours than you're physically and mentally capable of, and you make a costly mistake as a result. Whose fault is that, in a USAian context?
Overtime laws in the US, as far as I know, are a bit patchwork-like and vary a bit from state to state (and US labor law is generally not particularly worker friendly thanks to something called "at-will employment", but that's a separate story); however, if you're considered an non-exempt employee, then you can be asked/mandated to work overtime, but Federal law dictates you must be paid a premium for any of the overtime hours you work past 40 hours per week. Based on the description of the employment in question, it's non-exempt and any extra hours worked must be paid at the increased rate.

Quite frankly, the labor law protections being a lot stronger in Europe was something that took a bit of getting used to and also was a huge culture shock when I moved back to the US after my stay in Germany and France. It might've been part of why I moved back a few years later... and why I see myself staying on this side of the Atlantic.

Feedback welcome, especially between the two options I'm thinking about. :P

I like both options, although maybe lëtzeshark a little more.

lëtzeshark would be more authentic, but luxemshark would be more instantly understandable. Like Lērisama, I like both options.

Does anyone else have the impression that

1) the statements "The Perfect is the enemy of the Good" and "Never let the Perfect be the enemy of the Good" to some extent mean the same thing, and

2) that's a bit weird?

Yes, I know, that's arguably a form of cheating these days, almost as if you'd give someone a can of air as a present. But I think as a present to a not-very-tech-savvy person who uses neither streaming nor piracy, it can be justified. The standard procedure is that I hand her the CDs, and as soon as she's unwrapped them and looked at them, I rip them to mp3s and put those mp3s into the music collection on her computer. By now, that music collection consists mostly of the results of that process.
(...)

Which finally brings us to my question: which artists and songs is a person who, among other things, likes mid-20th century French chansons likely to enjoy?
It all sounds wholesome!
I think the classics are Brassens (literary, poetic, often bawdy), Brel (actually Belgian!), Aznavour. I really like Barbara (and I guess Göttingen will feel relevant to Germans). A little off the beaten path, but just as good or even better than the others, Anne Sylvestre though don't pick the Fabulettes (those are for toddlers!)

I'd also recommend Maxime le Forestier. What else? Bashung - especially the Fantaisie Militaire album (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTAXAjkVhxs)

For more recent artists, I'd recommend Thomas Fersen, Juliette, Pomme, Angèle.

Why not lëtzehai for consistency?

In some positive news, I got my battery replaced on Monday and made it to work yesterday. They seemed to understand about missing Sunday at least since almost nobody could come that day. Fortunately the blizzard slowed down production enough that I didn't have much work assigned on Monday or Tuesday anyway.

I realize this forum is trying to avoid the AI topic, but I must say that the latest entry in Mark's blog really chills me to the bones. Between its enthusiastic embrace of far right politics and its aggressive war on human art and literature, the tech industry has really soured on me. Unfortunately computers have colonized so much of the world that cutting them out is hardly practical. Everything from paying my bills to keeping up with the news would become way harder.

Does anyone know of an internet meme that is both 1) fairly well-known and 2) based on an older work of pop culture (or culture in general), which an older person would be likely to recognize? I'm asking in case I might want to explain and illustrate the concept of a meme to someone who's elderly and not very online.

The oldest Internet meme I can recall off the top of my head is All Your Base Are Belong To Us, which dates to the early 2000's as a meme, even though it is based off a 1991 video game. But that is something that would be familiar with people in, say, their early 40's today, who probably are not what you mean here by "older person".

I don't mean that the meme itself is old, I mean that the thing it's based on is. Like, is there any prominent meme that's a captioned screencap from Casablanca or something? Something based on some classical work of art, like, say, the Mona Lisa, would work, too.
