I'm currently translating The Hobbit chapter two, "roast mutton". It's not as difficult as chapter one, but difficult nonetheless, although I'm continuing at a decent pace.

What are your favorite coinages from chapter two?

Well, since Sajiwan is a CEC many words come directly from English, but annoyingly the Shire (it isn't even called that in the Hobbit) is like rural English country side, which of course isn't like a tropical Carribean island at all. I'm pretty sure no-one in Sajiwa has ever put on a "dressing-gown", for example. I translated that with "insay long-kot" ("inside long coat"), a "long-kot" also being something not really relevant to current-day Sajiwa, but at least historically it fits.

Several times in the chapter, I got to use the word "cambas" ([c͡çɐmbɐs]), meaning "mess" (as in stuff unorderly placed), from English "shambles" (perhaps a bit anachronistic - Etymonline has it attested 1901). Then there's "boc", "to guarantee" (from English "vouch"), and "biyaf" (final stress), "to represent" and "representative" (from English "behalf") on the first page alone. I calqued "poni" for "pony" but explained it's a "smol os" ("small horse") since Sajiwans won't be accustomed to the term.

There's a lot of stems, trunks and branches in chapter two, the former two I translated with "pam bim" (litt. "tree beam"), the latter with "pam stik" ("tree stick"). Though on at least one occasion, I just used "pam-dem" ("trees") instead of "branches" since that seemed to fit better (in this case, bird twitter coming "from the branches").

Another difficulty: owls. There are, to my knowledge, no owls on Sajiwa, let alone "barn-owls" and "screech-owls", so I just used the litteral translations of "bahn-olbaht" (dash to avoid the reading "burned owl", there's a lot of homonyms in Sajiwan) and "kwim-olbaht" ("scream(ing) owl").

I could go on for a while (e.g. about the "eye dialect" Tolkien uses for the trolls), but I think you get the drift. Translating isn't easy, even if using a language that looks a lot like English :).
