I mean, if I don't come out of Cambridge with a comprehensive knowledge of areal patterns of the languages of the world then frankly I've wasted my time there.Nortaneous wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2020 3:50 am man I try to find the most unplaceable thing and it gets placed. yes
Regardless the lack of ejectives suggest Guaicuruan?

Well, OK looking again Guaicuruan is more Chaco than Pampas, but still. The presence of sibilants precludes Abipón, and the absence of geminates precludes Kadiwéu, Toba seems to lack velars and Pilagá voiced postalveolars, so Mocoví?

Toba doesn't have velars?

Re: Name That Language!
It appears that the previous language has been guessed, so here’s two interesting languages I found:
Language 1:
Language 1:
Bayran adhi, Danalguban umayzinga. War thunara thana kulba moebaygal kedha. Uzarmoeyn Sigabadhoerpa burumpa lumaypa. Umay manin. Koeygoesar garkoezil ladhun. Thana kalanu burumiya lumemin. War moebaygan na burum nanga mathaman nanga, huydh Bayra burum mathamoeyginga. Senaw Bayra nanga nuy ngaw dhugu.Language 2:
Dííy rabeejérya trámpa jidyéy rácąątąąsa. Ratyęęrąjáy jííta rumusiy jiyu roorimyújų. Rą́ą́sąąchą́ą́siy jííta. Rayą́ą́siy jííta ránaachǫǫ. Rįįtachéésiy jííta rúúva “Trámpa rąą junúudyííy”. Rayą́ą́siy (a las seis de la manaña creo rayą́ą́siy). Rįįnúuñuvaajásiy jíítarà ríícya. Jąą́ jarírya rápųų́. Jásiy savichą́ą́siy ádnnujųy quiivą́. Sarra jirya, rúúnay muusirya, játiy rųųtachara "píjyuru quiivą́níí”.I’ll be very disappointed if you don’t guess Language 1 easily, but Language 2 should be tricky enough. (There’s actually slight code-switching to another language in the ‘Language 2’ sample, but that one should be trivial to guess.)

Re: Name That Language!
Hey, I spotted the code switching!
Re: Name That Language!
Well, it’s not particularly hard to find.

is "huydh" a typo, or is that correct? it looks like Kala Lagaw Ya, but that doesn't have /h/

Re: Name That Language!
You got it! Told you it’s easy. (So ⟨h⟩ must have been a typo.)
EDIT: It was a typo — the original source has ⟨nuydh⟩.

Read "uvulars"
Also are we not following the "winner picks the next language" rule?

Re: Name That Language!
Looks like we’re not. I think there is a flaw in that rule — when it’s implemented, then virtually the only people who can pick the next language would be you, Nortaneous and Karch! You three seem to be insanely good at figuring out languages, so when e.g. I find an interesting text, I don’t have a hope of posting it if we’re sticking to “winner picks the next language”.Frislander wrote: ↑Sun May 03, 2020 6:03 am Also are we not following the "winner picks the next language" rule?
No. (I assume you’re talking about the second text I posted.)

Re: Name That Language!
The second language is spoken in a Spanish-speaking part of the Americas but I genuinely can't place it. Is it spoken in Mexico?

No. (But I’m pretty sure you identified the code-switching language correctly.)

Re: Name That Language!
Well it has nasal consonants, so it cant be one of those languages that just uses allophonic nasalization from its vowels .... it has very few clusters, but one of those clusters is /tr/. It has tones and vowel length.... It basically looks like Navajo with /u/, and until you said it was S American I was still convinced this was a language spoken in the American southwest.bradrn wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2020 8:01 pmDííy rabeejérya trámpa jidyéy rácąątąąsa. I wanted to directly make a guess, but I'll hold off .... but to help narrow it down, is tr standing for /tʃ/?
