Congrats to the Board Lord for receiving David J. Peterson's Smiley Award. A very nice write-up of Verdurian and Zompist's overall influence on conlanging.

Congrats!

(And seriously, only in 2020? :) It should've gotten an award years ago!)

Perhaps David finally gave up his elitist stance on conlanging? :)

Oh, definitely. Don't get me wrong, I like the guy, I admire what he does and has done for conlanging, and in the few dealings I've had with him in the past he was always very amiable and friendly, but he has written (I'm sure it's still online somewhere), for example, multiple times about the early days of the conlan mailing list, and how these were the true conlangers, and how great all those conlangs were and so on and so forth without paying any homage to conlangers outside the list (like Mark).

no more so than anyone else here

he has opinions, some shared by others within the community, some not

his commercial success has brought about criticism for an attitude that I can assure you he does not hold

IMHO, there are current and former members of this board that make David seem like Mr. Rogers re inclusivity and acceptance

Oh, my views on his sometimes elitist behaviour stem from before his commercial success :). Like I said, I like him, and he seems to have come around a bit.

One does not exclude the other :).

Ehhh, to be honest, when I mention good conlangs, I talk about conlangs I've seen, and it's not like I've gone out of my way to get a decent sample of all conlangery. I know nothing about the Polish or Japanese or French conlanging scenes, except that they exist in some form, even if it's little groups. I see little wrong with Peterson giving smiley awards to just people of CONLANG-L. It's like how American movie awards try to make a big noise but mostly just reward American productions. I'm not sure if the Nobel Prize's pretensions of universal consideration are all that good (they do have a certain disproportional bias towards Swedish publications anyway...).

In DJP's defence, the claim that he doesn't give enough credit to this community seems pretty well undermined by the text of the award.

Like I said, it has changed over time. Perhaps he's getting mild :).

Congratulations, Zomp! I enjoyed reading what DJP has to say about Verdurian, the ZBB, and your influence on conlanging in general. Hope it comes as a nice bit of recognition - more than deserved! :)

Some really stupid fun!

Do you miss the feel of old-fashioned Pulp SF?

If so, zompist's gen can get some 40's style SF words!

Code: Select all

'en	se	ray	lul	pro	bar	dram	'en	rum	days
twan	sma	skon	sma	ro	skurr	nel	twan	terr	ra
rurr	plin	ren	tall	smeer	'eo	nurr	smewn	ca	res

rerr	les	ster	pwayn	sall	'el	raymm	smi	nar	rarr
sko	neo'	sme	son	small	to	bra	no	cayl	skumm

smurr	torf	nayrl	skaynn	lul	nar	sull	stul	twee	smern
numm	dwen	dree	rann	stul	'ar	sle	smun	num	ste
I can do pollysyllabes too -- but these require the SCA.

And yep, I am indeed going to use these for conlanging, because I have no shame.

I love this aesthetic.

The sample has a surprising number of English words in it (I count 21 out of 150)

Code: Select all

pro
bar
dram
rum
days
tall
star
stay
sell
till
stall
son
small
to
bra
no
mat
hell
