If yes, a nice path.l for a Germanic language
idk, i just decided to turn it into rgyalrongic. stress avoiding light final syllables (and previous vowel loss in heavy inflectional syllables) would probably help to keep it reasonable for a germanic language. a serious conlang would probably have morphological leveling and so on to keep it reasonable - or a rule that inflections can't be stressed, which would have the same effect

Code: Select all

Early changes, loss of instrumental
ĭ ŭ > e o, length lost in unstressed syllables
wólfs wolfós gásts gaɕȶís
wólfą wolfą́s gástę gaɕȶíns
wólfs wólfɔ̨ gaɕȶís gáɕȶɔ̨
wólfɛ wolfáms gáɕȶi gaɕȶíms

Strict application of stress rule, more consonant changes
βóɬɸs ɸɬɸós gásts xɕȶís
βóɬɸą ɸɬɸás gástę xɕȶį́s
βóɬɸs βólɸɔ̨ xɕȶís gáɕȶɔ̨
βóɬɸɛ ɸɬɸą́s gáɕȶi xɕȶį́s

Morphological leveling to preserve strong form of root (but palatal alternations are preserved)
βóɬɸs βóɬɸos gásts gáɕȶis
βóɬɸą βóɬɸas gástę gaɕȶįs
βóɬɸs βólɸɔ̨ gáɕȶis gaɕȶɔ̨
βóɬɸɛ βólɸąs gáɕȶi gaɕȶįs
although it's also possible that leveling could go in the other direction, with vocalic material added to the endings, and you'd get roots that are just consonant clusters. this would probably be dealt with through extensive lexical churn, but rgyalrongic has enough lexical churn that andrew hsiu thinks it isn't even a clade due to the low number of cognates. (this is obviously wrong - tangut is a western rgyalrongic language but that hasn't stopped anyone from explaining its historical phonology in terms of japhug, which is less related but was documented earlier - but not incomprehensibly so)

Aargh… I had just figured out a series of really nice changes when Rounin Ryuuji just posted before I could, then I just figured out another set of really nice changes and was about to post when Nortaneous did! Let me redo my entry for the second time now…

EDIT: …except, I just noticed Nortaneous has now posted two entries, deriving from two different people. Which one are we supposed to proceed from?

But surely the whole point of rGyalrongic is the weird irregular stem changes?

OK, looks like we’re having people getting confused again. Also, we’ve gotten pretty far from the original text:

(hmm, how did we get from ['wiljɑhelmɑz] to [ùʎè̤ː] again?)

So shall we have a new text, do you think?

Let's try for an Anglic language this time?

(Probably a bit later than Chaucer, but a good place to begin, I think.)

Hmm, I had somehow got the impression that the stem changes were more irregular than that, but yep, now that I check, I see that I was mistaken, and for the most part it is indeed just ablaut. Though, that being said, there are still some more irregular alternations:

rkwə̄t / rkʰū / rkō
rî / rə̄t / xwē
tû / vī / tō / və̄

3) coda -l > new vowel length
You can do that‽ (Though honestly, at this point, nothing much surprises me with sound change, especially when you’re the one posting about it.)

1. Glottal Stop + Consonant produces gemination, terminally assimilates to a preceding consonant or produces a long vowel
1.1 [h~ç~x] becomes [j] after [e i] or [w] after [o ɔ u], with [çç~hh~xx] becoming [jç] or [wx]; the shift is blocked by existing [w j]
2. Diphthong smoothing — [ej~ei] becomes [eː], [ɛ(ː)j~ɛ(ː)i], [æj~æi] become [ɛː], [ow] becomes [oː], [au~aw] and [ɔu~ɔw] becomes [oː], [ij] becomes [i:], blocked by nasalisation
2.1 [əh] becomes [a], [ah] becomes [aː]
3. The language is revived in writing, with an orthography reflecting a stage between the last and this, as below, with many long vowels written as when they were still diphthongs.

Who is for the next one later to be in PIE?

You guys can also introduce changes in morphology, syntax and vocabulary, miroring natural language change although it is up to you how much you introduce.

1. Voiced stopes become voiced fricatives except after a nasal, or syllable initially in a stressed syllable.

2. The rest of the stops undergo a chain shift Pʰ > P > B. Geminate plain stops do not undergo voicing.

3. Reduction of unstressed vowels: unstressed short {i e} {u o ɔ} {ɛ æ} {a ə} > ɪ ʊ ɜ ʌ. Unstressed long vowels shorten.

(1) Loss of unstressed terminal reduced vowels, with compensatory lengthening and stressing (or secondary stressing) of the syllable that came before
(2) Loss of nasal vowels with no nasal excrescence, but compensatory lengthening of the vowel if it is not already long, and shift of stress to it if it is.
(2.1) [ʊː] > [ʏː]
(3) [v] and [w] merge to [w].
(3.1) Vowels followed by [v] or [w] are often shifted, [a] > [ɑ], [ɛ] > [ɜ]; blocked by rhotacism.
(3.2) Regularisation of "be" paradigm
(3.2) Orthographical regularisation drive, replacing "v" with "w", and respelling vowel-w sequences as vowel-u sequences, spelling of /yː/ is "eu"; terminal [ç~x] shifts to be spelled "gh"; the distinct vowels [ɪ ɪː] tend now to be written "y", [j] is instead "i", except initially; some terminally-stressed words acquire ahistorical orthographical -e

1) Chain shift of long and short vowels to short and reduced
1.1) Reduced vowels become semivowels before other vowels
1.2) Reduced vowels merge to schwa / schwi (only distinct word-initially) and are deleted when phonotactics permit, becoming epenthetic otherwise
1.3) Stress shift away from reduced vowels
2) rj > ʒ
3) Final d > n
4) e o > ɛi ɔu > ai ɑu, ɪ ʏ ʊ > e ø o
5) Further orthographic regularization
