This language is a side project of mine.
Galician:
Мінеі вата лікса jас салвакопі із Девід Пітерсон.
minei vata, liksa jas salvakopi iz devid piterson
"I look forward to the eventual David Peterson bastardization."

minei: to me
vata: it is anticipated
liksa jas: final, ultimate
salvakopi: literally “gray copy,” post-Soviet slang for a document that has been Xeroxed too many times.
iz devid piterson: “from David Peterson,” normally in the genitive but most proper nouns borrowed in the last fifty years are indeclinable.

Because it's not Russian? The history of Cyrillic vowels is pretty complex. Just as many Cyrillic-using languages adopted I from the Latin alphabet in the early modern period, Galician borrowed the practice of using it interchangeably as a vowel or a consonant. This was a pretty logical thing to do, since phonemic palatization had already been lost, so consonantal /j/ only appeared at the beginnings of words before a vowel, or between two vowels, basically only in places where it couldn't be a vowel itself. The use of J appears in isolated cases from the sixteenth century, but was not standard until the Germanophilic 19th century, when being an educated Galician was a contest to see who could be the most in love with the language and culture of Vienna (This attitude is also why the 1798 translation of the Bible into Galician is full of demonstratives and sounds stupid, because the literati at the time were really trying to make demonstratives-as-definite-articles happen... it didn't).

Another fun holdover is ꙋ, a ligature of O and U that still survives in Galician handwriting, but has disappeared from the standard typeface.
