Resources Thread

Post by masako »

We had a long and heftily filled thread of resources on the old board, I think we need one here, too.

An extremely detailed and useful Arabic dictionary.

EDIT: NB; please add even a brief description of the links you post, it helps immensely when searching the board for info.

This is probably better done as a single page or something where the resources can be grouped by subject or type, rather than as a long thread.
Self-referential signatures are for people too boring to come up with more interesting alternatives.

Well, can we just ask Masako to edit his initial page every month or two, depending on how quickly new resources are added?

I'm obsessed with a historical grammar of the Iroquois languages that I recently stumbled across by Charles Julian. It has brief chapters on each language with a bird's-eye view that is perfect for gleaning conlang inspiration.

I did it. I made the world's worst book review blog.

Thanks for opening the tread, Masako. I recall finding some documents through the previous resources thread that I could not live without now.

This grammar of Bunun (De Busser) is hefty and got a ton of nicely glossed sample sentences.

Reduplication patterns get special attention in this grammar of Puyuma (Teng).

Pan's grammar of Saaroa can be recommended too. It is well structured and written in understandable english, which helps me when organizing and phrasing my own grammar.

There's this grammar of Paiwan (Chang) that I just found, so I had not the time to look at it in depth. Looks okay.

There's more Formosan grammars in pdf format out there, like Victoria's grammar of Atayal. Just did not manage to relocate the url, but seek and ye shall find.

There's a dropbox or Google Docs folder somewhere which is crammed full of grammars (scans) which I've seen shared in the past. Anyone got a link?

The Austronesian Comparative Dictionary is online, for those of us who might want to make a Austronesian conlang someday (like me).

I've never used it, but I've heard good things about William Annis' Conlanger's Thesaurus.

You should definitely give it a look, at least enough to get a good sense of what he's doing (if you don't already have that).

(Anyone know if he's circulated more a recent version of it? Or a searchable one?)

Hmm. You guys either forgot or are unaware of the Heap (the collection of dictionaries, mostly bilingual, that accompanies the Pile and the Stack).

I've sometimes heard talk of collecting selected papers from journals into a Mound, but I don't think that ever went anywhere (it's too much information to wade through).

A Chinese calligraphy site, providing samples of various styles. You could really improve your calligraphy with this! Notice how each sample has the name of the corresponding calligrapher below too.

I didn't know about these. I'm not entirely sure if these will be as useful as the grammars in the Pile, but it's certainly good to know that these are here!

(Also, why do I get the message There was a problem previewing this document. when I try to open anything in the Heap?)

I just tried opening some random files and I encountered no problems. I wonder whether it could be something to do with the country you're accessing this from...

I'm in Australia.

I think the problem is my browser: I'm using Chrome, but when I switch to Edge the problem disappears.

I've been thinking about how manner is expressed in my conlang Sint, and I found this. I haven't read the whole thing yet but it seems interesting and put some ideas I had in context:
