How about a Font-Related Matters Random Thread?

Post by Raphael »

I've noticed that people here sometimes discuss fonts, and I thought we could have one thread to collect all those discussions.

For a start, is there any word or expression for "mock-Greek" fonts of the Latin Alphabet? I mean the kind that are sometimes used to advertise Greek restaurants and the like:

I think 'mock-Greek' is a perfectly fine name for them. It's an old style: e.g. this example from 1810 is described as 'based ... on earlier Greek capitals'.

Perhaps you're looking for the term foreign branding although that encompasses much more than pseudo-foreign typography. Incidentally while reading that article, I encountered a brand of soda pop called pschitt.
