I used to work near one of the last stops on the RER B; it was okay but I can't say I miss it.
The real annoyance is having to take it to get to the airport. But getting to Charles de Gaulle airport is an unnecessarily painful experience, no matter how you get there.

The appendices are the best bit¹!
¹ I got bored about half way through the first one and just read the appendices. It was much better.

Re: Venting thread
This is a First World vent, but I had to release zeptoforth 1.12.0.1 today because I had accidentally left debug mode on in zeptoIP when I had merged code from my IPv6 development branch to my main development branch (even though I did not merge most of the IPv6-specific code). Thankfully I did not need to rebuild any binaries, but I should have caught this myself before I had made my 1.12.0 release. At least people who had already downloaded zeptoforth 1.12.0 do not need to download release 1.12.0.1 unless they plan on using zeptoIP.

Re: Venting thread
At my job, a lot of the codebase is made of functions like prepare_breakfast_and_vacuum_the_room(), where both tasks are intricately woven together. It means that if you want to vacuum a rug... well, you can't really re-use this function unless you (1) initialize some dummy breakfast data, or (2) do some heavy refactoring (that you'll never have the time to do because the deadline was last month).
Even innocent-looking subfunctions may have some weird side-effects, like the function toast_some_bread() that surreptitiously plugs in the vacuum cleaner.

Ugh... woke up with a sore throat, but worse yet, a post-nasal drip that made me feel like vomiting at times (even though I managed to not actually vomit). I feel a bit better now, but am still skipping physically coming into work (after all, they have signs up saying to not come in if you're sick...).

I'm already feeling considerably better (e.g. I no longer feel like I might vomit and my sore throat has gotten better), but I'm still staying home.Raphael wrote: ↑Thu Mar 27, 2025 9:38 amOh. Edit: Or maybe not; now I've got an annoying headache that I took some naproxen for...

Trivial vent: last night, before falling asleep, I wrote some stuff on my cellphone. It's kind of frustrating like how much a chunk of text can look on a cellphone, and like how little it then looks once you've transferred it to a computer.

I found out today that the money has run out and my contract won't be renewed after the end of July. So it'll be back to trying to persuade potential employers that yes, it is worth their while to consider a chap less than a decade from retirement who can only work part-time and can't travel much, when for the same price they could get a recent graduate who won't ask awkward questions and will be happy doing unpaid overtime.

Re: Venting thread
I just found out that a coworker I really liked working with from my previous institute in the Netherlands passed away, and quite suddenly as well. There's apparently not a lot of answers (perhaps unsurprisingly) as to what happened, though the people I've spoken to are as shocked as I am. And I was quite looking forward to seeing them again next month...
