Ah, don’t you love technological progress?
It's working now, but I needed to use my wife's phone to get past the Samsung thing. I have no idea how it's supposed to work for single people. :P
This is reminding me of when I was finding accommodation in Paris. The accommodation needed a French bank account for booking, but to make a French bank account I had to first have an address in France…

It's an even more vicious circle,
by asking employees to behave like algorithmes,
they can be replaced without loss,
get disillusioned people to accept it,
and finally believe in artificial “intelligence”...

Soon, humanism will become
the name of the retrograde opponents of happy modernity...

I am in Maryland for the LCC. Silver Spring, MD has the absolute worst state of its road system I’ve seen outside of Creve Coeur, MO. They ought to be ashamed of themselves.

I've been frustrated with how DHCPv6 support by zeptoIPv6 was broken when my house's Internet was upgraded from AT&T copper to AT&T fiber and I haven't yet figured out a reason why. Everything I have tried to resolve this has been fruitless, and until I can get DHCPv6 working again I cannot release zeptoIPv6.

I woke up this morning to learn that my cousin had committed suicide last night... he was so young. I think he was gonna be 17 or 18 this year.

On top of this tragedy, my mum who lives and works in the states now has to figure out if she can even attend the funeral, because she might not be allowed back in.

My condolences. That really sucks, and makes the bad day I had yesterday (basically, nothing worked out over an entire day) seem like the trifle it actually was (today was better again).

I wish I could make more of my conlangs without being bogged down in aesthetics, usually of the orthography. One one hand, aesthetics are kind of the drive of any art. I certainly am not doing conlangery to make a point. On the other, I feel this weird guilt even doing it for a fictional language, for fictional people (or even me and friends). How does everyone quell these doubts?

EDIT: I think this could apply to making concultures too, but on a larger scale. Describing cultures and societies in broad strokes has always nagged at me. Even when a statement is true, it is incomplete, and reads like "stereotyping but good this time". A way to dismiss the personhood of individuals. That's why i've never been too keen on many fictional cultures, something's usually off in this way

This one might deserve it's own thread, because i'm genuinely not trying to be contentious and it's about a detailed political topic. But i've already done that recently, so here goes. I'm kind of disturbed by how many people seem to fetishize* indigenity

Settler states are awful and it's disgusting to not only steal land but kill and suppress the cultures that were there at the present. It's obvious knowingly wrecking the environment is abuse What weirds me out when implying Indigenous people are better at caring for the environment due to some genetic or other essential cultural characteristic

The knowledge doesn't come from the spiritual vibes, but actually living there. As in learning, which can be taught to anyone within earshot. When i hear when people insist on blind deference to local indigenous groups for ecological reasons, it's them saying how genocide and apartheid would somehow be justified if only they were bad at caring for the environment. I shouldn't have to tell anyone that nobody should be special to deserve to be alive and well

Are English people in England suddenly Indigenous? Howabout Japanese people in Japan? Of course not. The point shouldn't be "I was there first", but displacement and righting that. And not everyone who acts like this would go as far as to support forced deportation or ethnostates, but all those who do support forced deportation or ethnostates do believe in Westphalian equilibriums. I need to stress I'm not implying Indigenous people would necessarily do any of that, this is an about an ideology, not a fate. Besides, forced deportation and ethnostates have been done on the jingoistic principles i outlined without any pretext of prior displacement

Don't get me started at fetishy translation like "one who fishes" for "fisher", or fetishy concepts like "traditional enemies". It's coming off like race science. Why must Indigenous people consistently be described as separate from the rest of humanity? "They are magical land defenders with the soul of ancients" is as dehumanizing as "they are brutes who leech off of our Englightened Wisdom", because you've just set oppressed people to a higher standard. The concept of nature is a bit dicey to me to begin with, but it really loses my favor if it's about anything humanity-related

* as in religiously fixate, not sexually fixate. that's also awful, but not what i'm referring to

Starbeam, perhaps your post could be moved to your Oppressorship Thread? It seems to be related to the main topic there.

It's a Venn diagram. Some people have used the fetishistic indigenity rhetoric as oppressors, such as Europeans turning away refugees; while non-cultural oppressed groups have declared essential grudges, like queer people calling for eternal punishment of non-queers. Maybe it deserves its own thread, because i don't think there's complete overlap

A hot take of mine: Two-factor authentication was a mistake.

Futhermore, it also mistakenly assumes that a person will never lose their phone (LOL) or phone number, or that the message can't be intercepted ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVyu7NB7W6Y&t=1090s ).

I hate academics and college-educated people acting oppressed when it cannot be further from the truth. In particular, i hate the assumption disdain or even criticism against the ivory tower is a cause for anti-intellectualism, no matter what is being said or what the speaker is doing to learn

how to attend college? have a lot of money. this is of course, symptomatic of a just society. and if you want grants (not loans, grants), you better have some luck on your side. loans are for people who prefer to have their life ruined later, but not now

how to learn from college? be in class. putting aside many people are made to physically be there when they shouldn't need to, there's this weird sentiment not getting it from one teacher means you must hate the subject. no. some people just don't get along or have difficulty communicating to each other

how to publish results? copyright! fuck copyright. the only defense it has is for people not claiming others' ideas as your own. but i care about the knowledge, not who it comes from. make sure piracy of most of the papers and texts is a federal crime. it's a good thing we have capitalism where the importance of learning and growing is undercut by Having A Profit Motive For Your Brand

if you put up a paywall, you are making blood money. people deserve to know how life works much more than you ever will deserve that three story house. or rather, your publisher getting a three story house. this is also related to why i hate the physical media fetishization complex, but i digress

i realize not all academics are like this. i wouldn't be making these complaints if i didn't want to join you and learn. but i am fed fucking up with bootstraps mentality leaking into this circle. i'm also aware this is mainly an American context, i can't speak on living anywhere else on earth
