nth ZBB Translation Relay (results out)

Post by Darren »

2025 Translation Relay

It seems there might be some interest in another relay. The last one, at least, was fun, although it got a bit lost. This time I'll impose an arbitrary deadline of a fortnight, although I won't be super strict about it. If you take much more than that, however, you'll be skipped in interest of finishing the relay in a timely manner (aiming for less than a year this time).

Rules

I choose a text, something a bit shorter this time given the tighter deadlines, say 100 words. Then I translate it into a conlang, send it to the next person with a short grammar and lexicon, they translate it and make their own torch. Each torch gets sent to the next person in line, and also to me with the English translation. If you feel that there's enough info about your conlang online that's well formatted enough to translate the torch in the time frame, you can use that as the grammar section if ya want.
The idea is a sort of Chinese whispers; at each stage you try and translate as accurately as you can, but also try to make the text make sense. You can adapt it to your con-conculture, but without going overboard; coin and/or borrow words if you feel like native speakers would do that. No modifying the text just for the sake of craziness, this will be severely punished.

Participants:

1. Darren: English → Pičíyyeihčipmatlapn
2. Foxcatdog: Pičíyyeihčipmatlapn → Manchakaa
3. Bradrn: Manchakaa → Eŋes
4. Lērisama: Eŋes → Lēri Ziwi (skipped)
5. Morkai5: Eŋes → Naucan
6. Man in Space: Naucan → Classical Gate n Tim Ar
7. Glass half Baked: Classical Gate n Tim Ar → Gullahonka
8. /ˌnɐ.ˈɾɛn.dɚ.ˌduːd/: Gullahonka → Kirñí (skipped)
9. TravisB: Gullahonka → Rihalle Kaafi
10. Darren: Rihalle Kaafi → English

I can keep entries open for most of the course of relay, but I'll send off the torch next weekend.

We're obviously having problems with the board, so in addition to pms, or instead of if you can't log in, email me your torch at sokjeongho@gmail․com as backup

Has any ZBB relay ever taken less than a year?

Anyway, I’d be happy to participate. The primary timesink for me has always been actually getting my conlang to a usable state, but now that Eŋes is fully-developed, I can just use that again.

(And I’m sure we’ve had more than 4 relays on the old board…)

I'll put myself up. I suspect Lēri Ziwi is well developed enough, but I'll have to write things down about it, which may take some time.

I'd be happy to participate with my recently developed conlang Kirñí!

I should also make it clear that I can move people around in the order willy-nilly, so let me know if you want to be in a different position.

For me, the main consideration is that I’m moving countries in September. Not sure what position would be best, though…

They had a video on LangTime Studio about conlang relays. If I remember correctly (it was a while ago I saw it) they recommended that you keep the original text really short, like three sentences or something like that. And that participants should only send a word list and grammar that contains things that are relevant for the given text.

Sorry for coming with advice when I'm not going to participate myself (my conlangs are not well developed enough yet), but I thought the idea about keeping the text really short seemed like a good idea. I think a major problem with the previous relay was the length.

I concur with all of those advices. Maybe something like 80-100 words, because sentence length varies considerably. We should also keep in mind that not all participants may be experienced in deciphering conlangs based on provided material.

When someone gives me the full Monty when it isn’t required, it negatively affects my abilities in deciphering the torch. I ran into this issue over at the Other Place once.

Three sentences is too short! I’m happy with a couple of short paragraphs. Both the last two relay texts (Man in Space’s and foxcatdog’s) were around that length, I think.

I have selected a text, which is 97 words. I don't want to go super short, even though that would speed things up, it would be too easy.

Anyone who's going to use a full grammar rather than just a torch, let me know and I'll make sure whoever's after you is okay with that.

You're in third place currently, which should put you in mid-to-late July.

That’s me, as I’m sure you recall. (Or does a ZBB scratchpad not count as a ‘full grammar’?)

As long as I¹ know in advance what you'll be doing² I can spend the extra time required in advance of receiving the text, so I don't see a problem, especially since I've already read most of it once.

¹ In case people don't know, or it changes after write this, I'm currently scheduled to be after you
² Which, of course, I do, assuming the schedule doesn't change

It’s just the posts on Eŋes in my scratchpad thread.

That's what I meant – I have the time to look over those again in preparation, and I know where they are. That's exactly why it's not a problem for me.

I'd like to be moved down two or three spaces in the relay, as I'm currently still working on expanding Kirñí's dictionary to a point that I'm comfortable with.
