Quick French question

Post by alice »

How many French words end in <q>, aside from "coq", "cinq", and various names like "Busbecq"?
Self-referential signatures are for people too boring to come up with more interesting alternatives.

It says there are 120, but at a glance a number of them are proper names.

As far as I know, it's just those. This book from 1815 says only those two words end in Q.

Interesting how that list includes e.g. vingt-cinq and trente-cinq yet omits both cinquante-cinq and quatre-vingt-cinq.

Everything else aside from coq and cinq seems to be a borrowing (e.g. nasdaq, tamacheq, nunaviumiuq). Romestecq is an old card game (18th or 19th century), but the etymology of the "stecq" part is obscure.
