Re: Conlang Random Thread
Either the conlang fluency thread is not very active lately or my suggested challenges went over like a lead balloon. Maybe text related to animal research is difficult or unappealing.

Re: Number etymologies
Sparrowgrass hex numbers aren't related to anything, except for A-F (10-15) which used to all begin with those letters. Not very creative. I've made some changes since then, but we still have deu, eix, fjos for 13, 14 and 15. With the decimal numbers, on the other hand, we have the obvious borrowing...

Made some changes so English and French don't slip through the cracks. 1.1. Case, tense, aspect and mood not productively marked with particles, tones or ablaut 1.3. Strong preference for suffixes over other types of affix (suffixing index more than 80% of the affixing index) 2.1. No productive use ...

Re: Please help.
I don't have much advice here, but: Are prepositions even a thing in a head-final SOV lang? There are a handful of SOV languages with prepositions and at least two languages that have prepositions and are probably head-final (relative clauses and adjectives before nouns). At least one (Tigré) has al...

Re: SAE phonology and grammar tests
The original test has the same problem with the "no marking of arguments other than the subject on the verb" item. I thought it was an improvement to exclude languages with the fairly un-European situation of no person marking at all, but if English and French both have object agreement, i...

Re: SAE phonology and grammar tests
When going through WALS for ideas on developing Sparrowgrass further, I felt unsatisfied with the original grammar test, so I designed an alternative that covers more ground. I don't know if it's an improvement, but it's another view of the issue. I don't have any grammars complete enough to get an ...

Re: SAE phonology and grammar tests
It's been a while. Bumping this thread because it was replied to after I vanished into thin air. My unnamed conlang scored about 66% on phonology (more than I'd expect) and 39% on grammar. (little less than my guesstimate) What is a converb? Maybe this still isn't explained well enough. a nonfinite ...

Interesting and well thought out -- better than any aliens I've come up with. You probably ought to use "sapient" rather than "sentient", though.

Re: Romanization Challenge Thread v2.0
Wow… I have to say, this is possibly the most impressive phonology I’ve ever seen! I am wondering what your romanization for this was: could you post it here? Well, it did grow out of an attempt to beat this test . It would have been even harder to work with if I hadn't ditched the voiceless implos...

Does anyone else pronounce "experiment" with /iː/ for the second vowel? I haven't found this anywhere. I already know I don't speak proper English, and I've given up trying to. Just wondering.

No, it had nothing to do with the Holocaust -- it's speculation about part of the backstory in my novel. There are similarities, yes, but I wasn't thinking of that when I wrote my post. I had a properly conlang-y response typed up, but I've been told my original post was inappropriate, so perhaps I ...

I know ñ is used sometimes, but I'll always associate it with /ɲ/ because of Spanish. I would probably use a different diacritic, though I have a hard time reading <n> with any diacritic as anything other than /n/ or /ɲ/. <g> and <q> are already taken, and using a non-nasal letter for a nasal just s...

Okay, looks like we can forget about that one. However, my point about the syllabic rhotic question still stands. If it's not there to make certain Slavic languages score higher, what's it for? Factor in all the fricatives and affricates, and I find the claim that it's even peripherally SAE more tha...
