A sound change begins

Post by alice »

Here's some evidence for the beginnings of a new sound-change in English, whereby initial prevocalic /h/ > /k/ when the preceding word ends with unstressed /i/. We can look forward to hearing this gradually extending to other contexts and perhaps other phonemes, thus getting a well-documented example of sound change in action.
Self-referential signatures are for people too boring to come up with more interesting alternatives.

I personally have noticed people in media content (local advertisements and like) who pronounce /h/ before high front vowels (not just /j/) as not just [ç] but what to my ears almost sounds like [cç].

If this is serious rather than sarcastic, isn't this, then, the wrong forum for this?

One guy replied, and I think he's onto something:

My theory is all these folk routinely use the c word during off camera editorial discussions thus increasing chances of on air mishap 10 fold. Also not ruling out possibility at least 2 of those were entirely deliberate.
