The Contradictory Feelings Thread
Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
The good: My new Raspberry Pi Pico 2 W's arrived and my little web server worked without any code modifications.
The annoying: The USB CDC console issues reared their ugly head and repeatedly got in the way of me uploading my zeptoIP stack, requiring me to erase it and start over a couple of times.

On the plus side: I had a wisdom tooth extracted today.
On the minus side: it was one of the most anticlimactic extractions in dental history. A few twists of the dental screwdriver, a quick yank with the forceps, and it was all over in less than a minute. I barely had time to settle down and get comfortable.

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
I'm not sure I understand why that's a minus. Had you been looking forward to spending time in the dentist's chair?

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
I didn't read the minus part as being entirely serious.

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
I was expecting it to be a lot longer and more complicated than it actually was. My wife said that wisdom tooth extractions are generally difficult, and I remember reading something about how it's sometimes necessary to saw into the jawbone. But nothing at all notable happened, except that I accidentally dropped the tooth while looking at it afterwards.

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
Flight back to the US for Christmas was pretty uneventful and the layover through Paris wasn't as bad as I was fearing...
...until I discovered that only one of my two bags didn't make and was still stuck in Paris! They claim they'll deliver it today, but it's really quite unpleasant to have waited for about an hour to see that it wasn't coming out of the baggage claim and then making a complaint at the airline office (which, no knocking on those people, but was horribly understaffed).

I finally got the necessary information to actually use my replacement debit card, and have now updated my payment information in various places.
Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
Apparently, earlier today there was a major train accident - at least one person died, and lots of injuries - really close to where I live. It's interesting how the same kind of news can hit you differently depending on how close it hits to home.
One thing I find a bit weird is that I heard about the accident from news reports. From what I've heard, it happened close enough to me that I should have heard the sirens of cops, firefighters, and ambulances rushing to the scene, but I didn't.

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
I just got back home from a wake for a man I didn't know that well, though with him being the kind of person who he was, my little contact with him was enough to leave an impression. I was accompanying a family member who is a close friend of the deceased's girlfriend. It was interesting to hear so many people talk about their experiences with him. But I'm still not entirely sure what to feel.
Oh, and one of the things I ate at the buffet was a kind of scone-like thingy, so I hope that I'm still sober.

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
I have never really been close to even the people I've been the closest to, and so I understand where it is that you come from. it is good to mourn those who have passed, for then we will not forget who they were and what they did for those around them, but at the end of the day, death is a thing for us all. at a point, you have to let them pass. (I'm not saying this is advise strictly for you, Raphael, but for anyone it might reach.)Raphael wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2025 12:06 pm I just got back home from a wake for a man I didn't know that well, though with him being the kind of person who he was, my little contact with him was enough to leave an impression. on the lighter note, at least you ate a scone. those things are delicious.Oh, and one of the things I ate at the buffet was a kind of scone-like thingy, so I hope that I'm still sober.

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
I'm confused – scones¹ don't typically contain alcohol, or are had with alcohol. How would they make you not sober?
¹ /skɔnz/², and anyone who says otherwise is wrong
² What do you mean about /c/? It was never here

I typically pronounce it as /skɔnz/, but I love the use of /c/

It's a Derry Girls reference. I mean "sober" as opposed to "high", not as opposed to "drunk":

I also am an ignorant American under most circumstances, but when it comes to things like food the British are right, it feels fancier to pronounce foods with their accent.Travis B. wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2025 1:31 pmI have /ˈskoʊnz/ [ˈskõ̞ːnts] because I am ignorant American unfamiliar with proper British pronunciation./nɒtɛndəduːd/ wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2025 12:54 pmI typically pronounce it as /skɔnz/, but I love the use of /c/

It's not settled in Britain – pronunciation of ⟨scone⟩ is a Shibboleth (GOAT is considered posh & Southern, although there are many people¹ who would he considered posh by most other measures but would pass this test)
To avoid ridicule, please never say this in front of a Brit²⁴/nɒtɛndəduːd/ wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2025 2:08 pm I also am an ignorant American under most circumstances, but when it comes to things like food the British are right, it feels fancier to pronounce foods with their accent.
¹ Me included
² Americans thinking a ‘British Accent’³ is posh provokes hilarity
³ The one recognised type, a horrifying mix of Cockney and traditional RP noöne here would be heard dead in
⁴ This seems unnecessary harsh rereading this. Please note I am exaggerating slightly

Just for the record, I was joking about 'proper' British pronunciation myself, if anyone missed that.Lērisama wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2025 3:40 pmIt's not settled in Britain – pronunciation of ⟨scone⟩ is a Shibboleth (GOAT is considered posh & Southern, although there are many people¹ who would he considered posh by most other measures but would pass this test)

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
If I tried to map the non-GOAT pronunciation of scones to my own phones it would come out as [skãːnts], which simply does not seem right.
