I realised recently that I barely knew the names of any plants here — I couldn’t even recognise a Eucalyptus let alone anything else — so I’ve been trying to learn more about botany recently. So far I can identify: Jacaranda, umbrella tree, delicious monster/swiss-cheese plant/whatever you call it, split-leaf philodendron, Norfolk pine, hoop pine, bunya bunya, bird-of-paradise, traveller’s palm, banana, ginkgo and liquidambar to the species level, as well as paperbarks, bottlebrushes, Banksia, palms, and possibly Eucalyptus and wattles. I know even less about Northern Hemisphere trees, despite the fact that I was born in Canada, and I can only empathise with your reaction to German trees!
