Feel free to smooth it over a bit. Fox's translation had already drifted away from the original. Or, write a completely new text roughly the same length and see if anyone notices (don't do this).

(Oops, I posted in the wrong relay thread. I'd better delete that.)

I have received the torch from Bradrn and have started work on it.

Funnily enough, I didn’t actually realise it was the wrong one!

PSA for the rest of the relay:

You can modify the text enough to function in your conlang and to an extent in your conworld. For example - if the text you receive has "mauled by a lion" and your conworld doesn't have lions, you could say "mauled by a bear". You can also modify it to make sense, but only with the bare minimum additional material.

Don't change the text just to make it more like texts from your conworld. Changing "mauled by a lion" to "was smitten down with the plague by Hafthmigror, Goddess of Plagues and Bricklaying" is bad. If texts from your conworld are usually shopping lists, don't try to turn the torch into a shopping list.

The fun in a relay comes from trying to keep as close as possible to the original text, then looking back at the end and realising where you went astray, maybe learning something about other people's conlangs.

Thank you for your attention.

End of PSA.

Could I potentially join in at some point? I want to use Rihalle Kaafi for my language. The only caveat is that currently I have what is more a grammar and dictionary for the language, so if whoever comes after me wants something simpler than that I would have to cut them down significantly.

I can put you at the end, then only that guy Darren has to deal with it

I'll have you know the original text from the last CBB relay was a bog standard recipe you can find online and yet when i got the first text of the relay i couldn't parse it as a recipe text because it was written as if the man was telling you a recipe. (at least that's how it was constructed based on what i got from the text before i got too sick to decipher any more). As for my translation into english of your text i've taken it as if you didn't mention some of the metaphors being used as i don't tell people what root+derivation means in my grammars or explain some of the metaphors used. So my english translation assumes a couple of the lexical items are metaphors for something else which makes the text more coherent of a story. From Bradrns text he doesn't seem to have done that with his translation and has several times used the "wrong" english meaning of the ones i gave him. I do however confess to jazzing up the text to make it fit more of an in universe text.

Darren showed me the original text; there were no such metaphors. That said, your English translation wasn’t too bad.

Yeah, please don’t do this. It (amongst other things) made my experience no fun at all.

I'm going to have to drop out this time. The combination of most of the documentation being on the ZBB, frequent errors and my week being a bit busier than I thought, so it is harder to take advantage of the error-free times, means there is no way I'm going to finish this on time, sorry. I assume I pass Brad's torch onto Morkai5.

It's super hard to log in in this forum! Always error...

OK! I have the torch. This is my first Translation Relay, and the text seems hard, and the grammar is scattered... So wish me luck!

Can we put Lerisama later in the chain? Then they could use the extra two weeks to transfer the documentation they need to a drive. I also have trouble logging in, but I do all my work offline anyway.

Oh… I’m really sorry to hear this. Hope the busyness passes!

Here is a request for everyone who is not done with their portions of the relay: could you put your content somewhere other than here on the ZBB, so people in the relay do not have to deal with the persistant AI DDOS-induced board issues? For instance, all of the information for my language is on my site https://travisb.neocities.org/.

Potentially yes, although it's up to Leri of course. There is some question of him having seen an earlier stage in the relay, but it would be stupid to try and cheat like that because like what are you even doing the relay for then.

This is some sound advice. I can be emailed at sokjeongho@gmail․com, so if you can't log when it's your turn just let me know. For some reason I seem to be having a minimum of problems with the board (touch wood), so I should hopefully be able to bridge the gap somehow. In fact, actually, it might be a good idea to just email me your torch anyway, as well as using DMs.

I don't have any good knowledge of what my schedule will look like in the next few months, and I did manage to understand a very little of the torch², so I think I'll bow out entirely.

¹ This made me smile: you've called me the LZ for language
² Not that it made any sense

Ah, sorry to hear that.

Close enough :D as an Australian I can't bear to call anyone by a name of more than three syllables, even in writing.
