  1. De-Rounin-ification: {c, cʰ, cɕ, c͡ɕʰ, ɕ, ç, ɟʑ, k, kʰ} → {k, kʰ, k͡x, k͡x, h, h, j, q, qʰ}, then {k͡x, k͡x} → x
This gets really old, really fast, and I believe the custom is not to just undo somebody's changes right after they do them. Also, "Rounin" is a descriptor, not a name.

Well, I do think this one is interesting on its own merits. ⟨δ⟩ for [χ] is a result which appeals to me, and isn’t just undoing previous changes.

(And, honestly, ‘turning everything into endless palatals’ also gets old fast…)

That's nice, but note that you singled me out in a way that comes across as pretty antagonistic in toneless text, and would appear to indicate that you were deliberately getting rid of something somebody else just did in a way you knew they would not like simply because you did not like what they had done (which you have a pattern of doing).

OK, my apologies, and I’ll try to avoid doing it again.

(And let this be yet another reminder to everyone how badly humor can come across on the Internet…)

I think we can consider this amicably resolved, then.

What, two people have a bit of a confrontation on the internet, and eventually, one of them apologizes, and the other considers the matter amicably resolved? What is the internet coming to? /sarcasm

  1. Syllable-final /nj/ coalesces to /ɲ/.
  2. τε is moved to before the noun phrase. When it comes before a vowel in its new position (as in both instances here), the vowel at the end of τε is lost, and tone is affected. The apocope is reflected in the orthography.
  3. Apocope also becomes reflected in the orthography with τά.
  4. Consonants degeminate.
  5. Front rounded vowels unround; as part of the same change, /ɥ/ becomes /j/.
  6. Central vowel rounding is redistributed so that rounded central vowels occur next to other rounded vowels or labial sounds and unrounded central vowels occur elsewhere; this introduces allophonic [ʉ].
  7. Mid-vowel collapse undergoes a second round and /ɛ/ becomes /e̞/.

Frication of Aspirates:[pʰ kʰ qʰ] > [ɸ x χ];
  • Resulting [χ r] merge to [ʁ];
  • Resulting [x h] merge to [x], which merge with [ɸ] before rounded vowels, or becomes [ç] before, and terminally following, front vowels.
  • Clusters of stop + [ʁ] develop new aspiration;
  • New aspirates devoice.

  1. Retroactively applied the /ɥ/ > /j/ change that I missed.
  2. /j/ elides in word-final and preconsonantal position when it follows a front vowel, making that vowel long if it isn't already.
  3. Remaining prevocalic /j/ becomes /ʝ/.
  4. The orthography, while still defective as it always has been, finally undergoes a major reform.

Aargh, just beaten by StrangerCoug… well, I spelt time on my version, so I’ll post it here anyway and let the next person choose their favourite:
  1. To atone for my previous post: {x, ç} → {ɕ, ʂ}, ʁ → ʑ / _ {i,e̞}
  2. ʉ → y → i, then {ɥ, i, e̞, e̞ə̆} → {j, e, ɛ, ɛĭ}
  3. ɸ → ∅
  4. {ɨ, ə, o̞} → {u, o, ɔ}
  5. ɕ → f / _ {o, u}
  6. Unaspirated obstruents voice intervocalically
  7. No orthographic reform at all!

The tones resolve into a relative pitch accent, with the last heavy syllable in a word usually becoming higher than the preceding and following syllables; for purposes of this change, a long vowel takes precedence over a short vowel + coda, even if the latter comes later in a word, with the following additional rules:
  • If the most prominent vowel originally carried a falling tone, the vowel's pitch is rising-falling;
  • A mid-tone vowel preceding it takes a low pitch;
  • A monosyllabic content word always takes rising-falling pitch;
  • Short posttonic vowels generally take low pitch. When there is a sequence of three or more low-pitched vowels, the middle is deleted unless one is a schwa, in which case the schwa is deleted instead;
  • A terminal short open syllable in a polysyllabic word cannot take a high pitch.

If we'd rather, we can do this one next (despite my realization the next post). It ended up getting forgotten about.

  1. The same formatting change that bradrn made to the last phrase is also applied here (gloss inside the collapsible box, unformatted text outside).
  2. A syllable break is now transcribed before nasal liason.
  3. Three consecutive unstressed syllables are now avoided, with one of them (most often the second) now given secondary stress.
  4. [t̪ d~ð̞] merge with [t͡ʃ d͡ʒ] before [i] or [ĩ], as part of the same change, [t̪j dj~ð̞j] merge with [t͡ʃ d͡ʒ] unconditionally.
  5. [j w] merges with [ʝ β̞] in intervocalic position; this is not blocked by word breaks, but is blocked by pauses.
  6. Short monophthongs lax except in stressed open syllables or in pausa. Secondary stress in an open syllable is enough to keep the vowel tense.

Shifts in the voiced velar fricative [ɣ̞]:
  • [ɣ̞ ð̞] are lost between vowels with semivowel excrescence:
  • The sequence [ɣ̞w] becomes [w]
Various contractions:
  • En un contracts to ẽu [ẽʊ̃]
  • No ha contracts to nua [nwɐ]
  • French-style de + article contraction, de la > da, de los > dos
Assimilation:
  • [s] > [ʃ] before [t͡ʃ]

  1. {ð̞, ʝ, ɣ̞} → {ɹ, j, ɰ}, then r→ɹ
  2. More extreme vowel reduction: unstressed {a, ɐ, ɛ, ɔ, e, o, ɪ, ʊ} → {ɐ, ɐ, ɐ, ɵ, ɪ, ɵ, ɪ, ɵ}
  3. Yeísmo: ʎ → j
  4. {ẽʊ̃, ẽũ} → ɐ̃ũ (spelt ⟨ão⟩)

  • Loss of [ɵ] in terminal syllables with compensatory lengthening of the preceding vowel; this is blocked if the preceding syllable has a diphthongal nucleus;
  • Loss also in intertonic syllables in words of three syllables or more, with like compensatory lengthening;
  • Unstressed [wɵ ɰɵ] > [u] with appropriate resyllabification
  • Remaining [w ɰ] are coloured by a following vowel, becoming [ɔ̯] before [a ɐ] and [ɥ] before [bki]i ɪ[/bk]

  • [θ] shifts to [f].
  • Syllable-final [ɾ] is lost, with compensatory lengthening of the previous vowel (if there is one in the same syllable and it's not already long).
  • Vowels which have become silent are deleted from the spelling; acordarme also loses its d.
  • Retroactively applied some other spelling changes in the gloss that were missed.
