This gets really old, really fast, and I believe the custom is not to just undo somebody's changes right after they do them. Also, "Rounin" is a descriptor, not a name.

Well, I do think this one is interesting on its own merits. ⟨δ⟩ for [χ] is a result which appeals to me, and isn’t just undoing previous changes.Rounin Ryuuji wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2024 9:20 amThis gets really old, really fast, and I believe the custom is not to just undo somebody's changes right after they do them. (And, honestly, ‘turning everything into endless palatals’ also gets old fast…)

That's nice, but note that you singled me out in a way that comes across as pretty antagonistic in toneless text, and would appear to indicate that you were deliberately getting rid of something somebody else just did in a way you knew they would not like simply because you did not like what they had done (which you have a pattern of doing).bradrn wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2024 9:30 amWell, I do think this one is interesting on its own merits.Rounin Ryuuji wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2024 9:20 amThis gets really old, really fast, and I believe the custom is not to just undo somebody's changes right after they do them. What, two people have a bit of a confrontation on the internet, and eventually, one of them apologizes, and the other considers the matter amicably resolved? What is the internet coming to? /sarcasmRounin Ryuuji wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2024 11:23 amI think we can consider this amicably resolved, then.

Re: Phrase evolution game
- Syllable-final /nj/ coalesces to /ɲ/.
- τε is moved to before the noun phrase. When it comes before a vowel in its new position (as in both instances here), the vowel at the end of τε is lost, and tone is affected. The apocope is reflected in the orthography.
- Apocope also becomes reflected in the orthography with τά.
- Consonants degeminate.
- Front rounded vowels unround; as part of the same change, /ɥ/ becomes /j/.
- Central vowel rounding is redistributed so that rounded central vowels occur next to other rounded vowels or labial sounds and unrounded central vowels occur elsewhere; this introduces allophonic [ʉ].
- Mid-vowel collapse undergoes a second round and /ɛ/ becomes /e̞/.

Re: Phrase evolution game
- Retroactively applied the /ɥ/ > /j/ change that I missed.
- /j/ elides in word-final and preconsonantal position when it follows a front vowel, making that vowel long if it isn't already.
- Remaining prevocalic /j/ becomes /ʝ/.
- The orthography, while still defective as it always has been, finally undergoes a major reform.

Re: Phrase evolution game
The tones resolve into a relative pitch accent, with the last heavy syllable in a word usually becoming higher than the preceding and following syllables; for purposes of this change, a long vowel takes precedence over a short vowel + coda, even if the latter comes later in a word, with the following additional rules:

In a village of La Mancha, the name of which I have no desire to call to mind, there lived not long since one of those gentlemen that keep a lance in the lance-rack, an old buckler, a lean hack, and a greyhound for coursing.
(I'd have put the next two sentences as well, but it's late and this is plenty.)

- Coda [nʲ m ɱ] > [ĩ ũ ũ], except when followed by a vowel in a following onset that forms a part of the same utterance, in which case it attaches to the beginning of the following word;
- Coda [n] disappears entirely with compensatory lengthening, except as above;
- Where such a shift occurs, following voiceless consonants voice, and following voiced stops become nasals;

Re: Phrase evolution game
- The same formatting change that bradrn made to the last phrase is also applied here (gloss inside the collapsible box, unformatted text outside).
- A syllable break is now transcribed before nasal liason.
- Three consecutive unstressed syllables are now avoided, with one of them (most often the second) now given secondary stress.
- [t̪ d~ð̞] merge with [t͡ʃ d͡ʒ] before [i] or [ĩ], as part of the same change, [t̪j dj~ð̞j] merge with [t͡ʃ d͡ʒ] unconditionally.
- [j w] merges with [ʝ β̞] in intervocalic position; this is not blocked by word breaks, but is blocked by pauses.
- Short monophthongs lax except in stressed open syllables or in pausa. Secondary stress in an open syllable is enough to keep the vowel tense.

Shifts in the voiced velar fricative [ɣ̞]:
[ˌẽʊ̃ lʊˈwɐɾ ð̞ɐ ˈmãĩ.d͡ʒa | d̪ɛ ˈku.ʝɔ ˈnõũ.mɾe nɔ ˈkje.ɾɔ ˌβ̞a.kɔɾˈð̞ɐɾ.me | ˈnwɐ ˈmu.t͡ʃɔ ˈt͡ʃẽũ.bɔ kɛ β̞ɪˈβ̞i.ʝɐ ˌũ.n͜ ɪˈjɐl.ɣ̞ɔ wɔz ð̞ɛ ˈlãː.wɐ ɛ̃.n͜ ɐʃ.t͡ʃɪˈʎe.ɾo | ɐˈwɐɾ.ɣ̞ɐ ãːˈd͡ʒi.wa | rɔˈθĩũ ˈfla.kɔ wɪ ˈjɐl.ɣ̞ɔ ˌko.rɛˈjɔɾ]

- [ɣ̞ ð̞] are lost between vowels with semivowel excrescence:
- The sequence [ɣ̞w] becomes [w]
- En un contracts to ẽu [ẽʊ̃]
- No ha contracts to nua [nwɐ]
- French-style de + article contraction, de la > da, de los > dos
- [s] > [ʃ] before [t͡ʃ]

- {ð̞, ʝ, ɣ̞} → {ɹ, j, ɰ}, then r→ɹ
- More extreme vowel reduction: unstressed {a, ɐ, ɛ, ɔ, e, o, ɪ, ʊ} → {ɐ, ɐ, ɐ, ɵ, ɪ, ɵ, ɪ, ɵ}
- Yeísmo: ʎ → j
- {ẽʊ̃, ẽũ} → ɐ̃ũ (spelt ⟨ão⟩)

Re: Phrase evolution game
- Loss of [ɵ] in terminal syllables with compensatory lengthening of the preceding vowel; this is blocked if the preceding syllable has a diphthongal nucleus;
- Loss also in intertonic syllables in words of three syllables or more, with like compensatory lengthening;
- Unstressed [wɵ ɰɵ] > [u] with appropriate resyllabification
- Remaining [w ɰ] are coloured by a following vowel, becoming [ɔ̯] before [a ɐ] and [ɥ] before [bki]i ɪ[/bk]

Re: Phrase evolution game
- [θ] shifts to [f].
- Syllable-final [ɾ] is lost, with compensatory lengthening of the previous vowel (if there is one in the same syllable and it's not already long).
- Vowels which have become silent are deleted from the spelling; acordarme also loses its d.
- Retroactively applied some other spelling changes in the gloss that were missed.
